OT: Removing '98 C1500 fuel pump fittings

The fuel pump died as I was leaving a friend's house at 10pm with a lumber rack full and the bed full of old mixed lumber. I called AAA and the woman I talked to said she knew my kind of C1500 truck and I was over the 14,000lb limit, so I had to unload everything before AAA would tow it. I moved everything to a borrowed truck and made two trips over two days. When I got the truck home, I cut a hole in the bed to access the pump. Now I cannot retract the steel fittings far enough to use a scissor type tool. I've twisted and used WD40 but only have a 1/4" space. I think the fingers are dug into the plastic pipe. Any help appreciated.
Thanks,
Slowpoke

I have never had to do this but its been reported to snap off the plastic fitting are the pump, The pumps is being replaced anyways.

Having looked at the new fuel pump, the lock ring is only about 7/16" from the body. There is no room to get a disconnect tool on the tube to unlock it. There must be some way short of breaking the tube off the pump.

I am sure everyone who BTDT has had to go thru there selection of line removal tools to find one that will work are even modify a tool by grinding till it fits. I would blow compressed air into the lock and get it as clean as possible then lube. You will need to push the tool inside the lock till it stops and push the line toward the tool. It can be a fight when the locks are released the line will slip off.

After removing the bed liner and cutting the access hole, I power washed the bed and fuel pump area. I can see the little fingers inside the fitting, there just isn't enough room to get any of the borrowed AutoZone tools on the tube. It looks like I'll have to buy a scissor type tool and grind it to fit.

Break the lines off the pump, then normal line release tools will get the stub out. To remove them on the pump requires a special low clearance release tool that is inserted in two pieces.

You probably have it done by now, but if not:

Flush and blow all the dirt out of the fitting, you want to do this to make the ring removal easier and prevent dirt from entering the tank when you remove the pump.

Get yourself a pair of scissors and an ice cream bucket or sour cream container lid and cut a strip that will fit in the space you have to work with.
Next cut a piece of it to length that will wrap around the tube.
While holding the plastic in place, move the fitting towards the pump as far as it will go.
This will relieve the load on the retainer.
Now using a pick, small screwdriver or two, needle nosed pliers, scissors, tweezers etc. slide the plastic into the fitting to release the clips then pull off the line.

Other things that work;
A piece of the barrel from a click type pen.
Saw part way through a piece of copper water pipe and bend 90 degree then notch out and form to the size of tube you are working on.

I have a drawer full of purchased and homemade tools for dealing with all the different applications and fittings I have had to work on over the years.

Hello slowpoke,

I don't knows what I am missing, but can't you loosen the tank straps to get more wiggle room?

Guido.
