Dehumidifier Shopping

What ever one you get make sure it has a way to put a drain line on. I am forever emptying the one I have an old whirlpool.

I gave up on NEW ones and have been buying old ones that still work ! The new ones have made in China compressors that crap out and leak out the Freon.

I've been thinking of shopping for a humidifier; we've ha 8-9% humidity the last few days so I'm getting zapped just walking around in the house and touching things that are grounded.

I picked up an old school dehumidifier at goodwill for $10. Works great. New dehumidifiers have digital controls which I have to turn on each time there is a power blip. I hate that.

Don't know if they're available but I would try to find one with a metal case. There were some plastic cased dehumidifiers a few years ago that started house fires when the compressors overheated & melted the case.

I have had good luck with the GE unit that Sam's Club sells. I think it's a 50 pint model and I have been happy with it for the past several years. We had high water last year and we had our basement carpet get wet from the groundwater coming in from below the floor through the cracks in the slab.

First time in 15 years anything like that has happened. It actually got so bad at one point I went out and bought a 2nd one and had both of them running while we kept our carpet cleaner busy sucking up water. Both of them still work fine and I have no complaints. The year before I bought the GE I got a cheap one from Menard's that was recalled due to fires. The refund check got me the 1st GE and I have never been disappointed.

Do your homework, don't buy a cheap one.

Have 2 LGs 70 pint from Home Depot in an Alabama basement for the past 4 years with no problems. Accurate electronic controls not affected by power interruptions. Tank drain piped outdoors.

Danby Premiere DDR70B3WP 70 Pint Dehumidifier Just put this one in the cellar of the church. Highest rated one I could find on Amazon. A dehumidifier is not worth much if no one is going to empty it. I also got a pump to put on it Little Giant 554435 VCMA-20ULST-115 Condensate Removal Pump, 115V . It is possible to find a dehumidifier with a built in pump too. There is a noticeable difference in the basement of the church now and I expect when I put a pump on the other one, they will lower the humidity to a point where they won't run 24 hrs a day.

The only dehumidifiers I have had good service with are Delonghi sold at Costco. When I say good service I mean lasting more than one season if that.
