I have been looking for a multiple speed vertical band saw(fast for wood , slow for mild steel) No luck with google Any ideas?

A DoAll branded saw should fit your needs.

They are going to be expensive though, unless you can find a used one reasonably priced on an auction or such.

I have an Ellis, but it cost over $2,000.00. And it's not the best as a vetical as the blade is 1". The do make a smaller version with a 3/4" blade. I would think you will be better off with 2 saws so each does its job well.

Craigslist. But, be advised, patience is a virtue.

The best 14 inch wood cutting band saw for the $ in sold by Grizzly industrial. But I don't think I would cut steel with it.

I would go with one saw each for wood and metal as you would not be happy with only one.I have has a Buffalo metal band saw and an old Craftsman for wood for 20+years and have served me well. I don't use them a lot but at least once a month.Depends on how much you will use the saw. If you will be cutting heavier metal, a commercial saw would be best.

I have a cheep $200, tilt table, steel cutting saw, that works well. It will even stand straight up and I can cut free hand.
If you do get one, check it's gear box. After a couple years or so the gears went out because of the lack of grease.

I have a saw that can be used in vertical or horizontal position. Not a really big saw, but works fine. Adjustable speed by changing belt position. I am not sure about using the same blade for wood and metal. This saw has an auto shut off when using it in the horizontal position so you can walk away and let it cut. Bob

To do what you want is going to get into an industrial grade saw, something with a hi-lo gear box. Look more to used machine dealers, auctions. It will probably have a 3 phase motor, which can be changed out or add an inverter.

This is not likely to be something you will find in home workshop duty, and if you do, it's not going to be real reliable.

Do some research, be sure the saw is capable of that wide of speed range.

The blade width is generally not a problem, you can run just about any width with minor adjustments.

If you can, find one with an external motor on the back with a belt drive. Then you can put multi groove pulleys on it.

Lots of folks have taken cheap woodworking bandsaws and converted them to metal saws by adding speed reduction systems. Whether this is really cheaper than getting a metal saw in the first place I can't say. But google "bandsaw speed reducer" and you'll get plenty of hits.

>If you can, find one with an external motor on the back with a belt drive. Then you can put multi groove pulleys on it.

The metal-cutting saw needs to run at only about a tenth the speed of a wood saw. You're not going to be able to get that kind of reduction with just a pulley change, since the wood saw will already have a small pulley on the motor and a big one on the saw. Most bandsaw conversions involve adding a jackshaft to get a second or even a third reduction.

To me it would be a pain to switch back and forth from wood to metal. Harbor Freight makes a metal cutting bandsaw that works very well for about $250. They also have a wood bandsaw but I haven't used that one.

It's buy two saw time; one wood, one steel. That's what I did 30 years ago...as soon as you get into the do it all stuff, bend over and grab your ankles. Just dumb luck or an accident to find something you won't have wince when paying for it.
