Small Tractor Battery

So I am thinking to myself. A battery for a small tractor can be a bit expensive. Can I use one out of a batter pack starting unit like they sell at Harbor Freight?

They are often on sale for $60.00 and then using a 20% off coupon that you can get on line brings it down to $48.00.

Anyone ever done it?

Those are very undersized batterys with NO reserve capacity. It works only a battery that is good but run down.. what is does is give its charge to the run down battery.. the run down battery has the ability and design to put out HIGH CURRENT for long periods.. the smaller jump battery DOES NOT

yes it will work, but will only give you a few starts before overheating and going open...

I must be missing something here. Why not go with a Tractor Supply battery? Their largest (420 CA) garden tractor battery is $49.99.

In May of '11, the 3 year old LA-135 limited edition lawn tractor's factory battery went dead, and it was run during the winter just for the purpose of maintenance of the battery.

I went to the JD dealer and bought a $60 Strongbox battery. 6 seasons later, it tests like it was new, and I still run it a few times in the winter like always. It's also in a heated garage. $10 per year beats a new one every year, surprisingly its held up well for a lawn tractor battery.

Walmart the last couple years has been selling U-1 batteries for $20. 180 amps or so. It'll start my BMW R-90S with no problem. That's a 55 cubic inch, 9.5 to 1 cr, engine. Lots more than any small tractor engine.

You don't dare charge them with something other than the trickle charger that is with them that is more like a battery tender. You can use a regular automatic charger for a short time but leave it to long and the battery is shot. I have a couple that I did just that to out in the shed. I would think the cutouts or voltage regulator on tractors would work more like the battery chargers than the battery tenders. I bought the jump n carry 950 that can be plugged all the time but you still can kill the battery on a regular charger.

Hello oldfarmtractor,

A 235 CCA Battery for a lawn tractor is aboug 1/2 the price of that jump box. I can buy the battery for $30, not expensive is it? The box would probably star the tractor, not sure about colder weather though. My vote is.....get the battery,
You can built a jump box out of recycled cells like I did, see my post. It starts the tractor just fine.

I have a 630 JD that I needed to move but I don't normally keep a battery in it (keep it from moving) I used one of the harbor freight jump packs to start it and move it. Then I found in a small (10 HP) rider I was given a lawn mower battery, I put it in and it starts the tractor just fine, not sure at -10 works for me

I use batteries from golf carts on almost all my equipment . The closed cell units that come from powered golf club bags for garden tractors and the bigger golf cart ones for the Fergusons .
You can usually get them for scrap price from any place that services the carts and they are generally very good . Once they are too weak to drive around 18 holes and back to the car park they need to be changed . 17 holes is still a long way and a lot of reserve capacity .
Last ones I bought are being charged by a solar panel and have been powering my shed for five years . The gell battery in the John Deere ride on is almost ten years old , the Fergusons' batteries at least eight .

I've been buying them at Rural King and Menard's for $36 - $39, regular price. Watch for them on sale and you can get them cheaper.
