Paint or Loctite

Working on an old disk harrow with my brother, replacing some broken/bent/loose/rusted 50 something bolts that hold it together. We were using Loctite on the nut/bolts and ran out. Nearest store is some 20 miles away and my brother mentioned some folks use spray paint on the threads instead of expensive Loctite. Sounds reasonable to me, so we tried it.

What say you?

I suppose it will provide some friction, but it is far from a loctite substitute. Loctite is anerobic it dries when placed in the tight space between a nut and bolt since it's not able to get air. Paint is the exact opposite

when tuning two-way radios, used the wife's nail polish to "lock" the tunening studs in place and keep them from moving. Worked very well where they were worn a bit and kept moving in the cardboard tubes. Always keep a bottle on the electrical work bench, unless she sees it and takes it back.
