Book search children's fable , sort of on topic

I have trying to find the title of the storybook that used to be around home . It's been well over four decades so the details are fading.
The story had the general gist of a crow and maybe a fox going around teasing and tormenting the other characters with rhymes . Eventually the crow and fox? fall into a pit and are injured . The other animals rally around even through they have been teased and rescue the crow and the fox? Iirc the crow had an injured leg and somebody made him a crutch or cane . The fox had an injured arm that somebody made a sling for . the crow or fox was wearing a large straw hat ?
It was not the story about the thirsty crow that dropped pebbles into a shallow pitcher of water . Not was it the story about the fox stroking the ego of the crow sitting in a tree holding a biscuit in it 's beak.

This sounds a lot like an adaptation of one of Aesop's fables . You might try looking at work attributed to him to see if there are similarities .

It is not Aesop and not Grimm . Any search keeps bringing up the fox and crow with the cheese or biscuit. My wife says she heard it but can't think where.

The straw hat part, and the fox (or crow) tormenting other animals makes it sound like a Joel Chandler Harris story from the Uncle Remus series. A quick Google search of that writer and series didn't turn up anything though.

I have looked for several years for a child's book. On the cover was a horse with a tear in his eye. He had a straw hat on with ears sticking up through the hat. That is about all I remember. I have found several that was similar but wasn't the one I.m hunting for.

Any ideas??

Hello Guido;

Buickanddeere says in his question that it's not the Aesop's fable story, so what question are you answering? I usually think of you as one of the people who DOES read the question before answering. Though not universally practiced, that's a good policy, and I think you shouldn't abandon it.

It's interesting sometimes to sit back and
look at the real meaning of these stories.
If I'm working with someone I try and pull
out the story of the turtle and the hare
basically slow and easy gets the job done.
I'm wondering if your story is maybe a
regional story by someone familiar with the
area you grew up in and the folk stories of
the area you came from.

Hello Stan,

It is an Aesop's fable he is looking for. Fox and the tortoise is another one. Fox and the grapes, Fox and the stork. Those are the ones that come to mind now. I may still have my grammar school text book with those fables in it. Afcourse it is in Italian. If I dig it out I may take a picture and post it

Guido.

Stork ? Will have to check that out , maybe it wasn't a crow.
The story of the Little Red Hen is about the earliest I recall and it's still wisdom to live by.

Hello buickanddeere,

Go ahead and do that. The fox and the stork IS another one of Aesop's fables. Post back if you can't find
it, I will point you in the right direction...

Guido.

I had read the fox and the stork at one time but forgotten about it . This fable was in a simple little semi modem coloured story book of probably a dozen pages. The main characters were teasing hard working folks but later fell into a pit and required rescuing . There were leg and a arm/wing injurys that were treated .
