O/T Replacing a pressure guage on a well pump

My well pump is located in my basement and the face of the pressure guage hs gotten cloudy and hard to read. Can I just remove and replace it with a new one? Do I need to do anything other than take the old one out and put the new one in?

turn the pump off, open a tap and wait till no water comes out. wrap the new one with teflon tape and go for it. Or ignore it, swmbo will tell you when there is no pressure.

Hello wsmm,

Turn the pump breaker off and bleed off all the water. If you have not bought one yet, get one that is partially filled with a clear fluid (glicerene). Last a lot longer...

Glover.

On mine the gauge hole is right at the center of the cross so there is no shut-off. You will need to drain the tank, so put a hose on it.

if its a shallow well pump you will lose the vacuum and have to reprime--if its a submersible just throw the breaker and bleed off pressure as others have said.

Are you saying, prime by adding water into the hole when the guage screws into? Will I have to do the same thing if I replace the pressurised water tank. It is not a submesable pump it sits on the incoming line from the well, which has a stand pipe.

Your system has to have a foot valve, or a check valve somewhere in the system to work. So, hopefully, when you remove the gauge, there will be water right there. If it doesn't pump up, yes, you'll need to get water in the pump to prime it.

OP, you're on your way, but this was a real opportunity for some 3 Stooges style plumbing! Especially with the 3 hour documentary with Moe's son and daughter this week to remind me....[/i]

yes you will have to prime in both situations--the pressure gauge hole is rather small--there should be a pipe plug somewhere on the top of the pump or incoming line that you can add water in---now if you have a foot valve in the well you may just need to turn the pump on and it will self prime

I see no reason to prime, turn breaker off, drain at pressure tank, replace gauge, turn breaker on, bleed at faucets.
