What is the difference in a regular drill, drill-driver, hammer drill or impact wrench except the impact would not have a bit chuck.

A drill simply rotates the chuck, a hammer drill both rotates that chuck and impacts it endways as an aide in drilling (used mainly in concrete or rock) A driver has a clutch mechanism to limit torque applied. Am impact driver uses an impact mechanism to increase the torque applied. Never seen a unit with all 4 functions but drill/hammer/drivers are common.

Take a drill bit, set it against a surface, and hit it with a hammer as if it were a nail. That's the action of a hammer drill.

Take a combination wrench, put the closed end on a nut, and hit the other end with a hammer to rotate the nut. That's the action of an impact driver.

So a hammer drill is about only good for drilling concrete, did not know if it hammered sideways like an inpact wrench or not but sounds like mostly endways impacts for the concrete. See the drill-drivers and hammer-drills advertised all the time but could not see much use for them. Always just used a regular drill, even a single speed model, for screws.

There are some made I don't know what it's called but I used one a few times. They are GREAT for screws as they will prevent stripped out heads and remove some with stripped out heads.

Most hammer-drills have a switch or lever to change the action. They can be run as conventional drills or hammer drills.

After I got my impact driver, I found that in most cases it is much better for driving screws and a drill/driver.

A regular drill usually just has one high speed intended to just drill holes. A drill-driver usually has an adjustable speed so you can either drill holes or drive screws. It also has more torque than a regular drill. The hammer drill usually has a setting where you can use it as a regular drill and another setting for hammer drill. It vibrates vertically for drilling into concrete making it more effective. A masonry drill bit used in a regular drill tends to overheat causing the carbide tip to come off. The hammer drill is well worth purchasing if you need to drill very much concrete. The impact wrench just uses more torque and slower speed for sockets.
