Sleep Number Beds

Consumer Reports say they aren't any better than any other mattress as far as sleeping. You can buy expensive air mattresses or cheap air mattresses and they perform about the same. Eventually they will go the way of the water bed; guess they are just the current fad.

I have had one for about 15 years and absolutly LOVE it..They well worth the money in my opin...was worried about cost way back then(Hasnt changed)...salesman said"you spend 1/3rd of your life in your bed...the most relaxing and quality time and you want to skimp on price?" Bought the sleep no. and never regret..get dual chambers so each can have to their liking and enjoy

Sleep number beds are not a fad they have been in business since 1987. I don't have one but several family members do and they like it and they have had them over 15 years.

We have had one for twenty plus years, I love it. Used to wake up and search for areas that didn't hurt. Since sleep # I wake up and search for parts that do hurt. Never find one. I use really firm, mama uses really soft setting.

Had one for a few years but didn't care for it. To me it felt like adding or releasing air just made me higher or lower. Other half didn't like the split in the middle as that is her half of the bed. Gave it to my brother and he is still using it 15 yrs later. To each their own.

Steve,

My wife and I have had one for nearly 10 years. We love it and will never have a conventional mattress in the future.

Because I'm a cheapskate, we did not buy the optional display that shows the actual number of firmness of the bed. I don't care because I make my side as hard as it will go, but my wife likes to change her side occasionally. In retrospect, I would opt for the display also.

Back pain - gone.

Have one for 10+ years, way to much money for what you get, could make yourself once you see one! Wife's purchase.

I tried one and returned it before money back period ended. They offered to give a 40% refund and let me keep it. Ordered a Tempupidic clone on line and love it.

I had one a few years back. If you are healthy enough to have a "evening life" with your other half this bed is a disaster. There is a split down the middle with two chambers. If your wife likes the bed soft, and you like yours firm just think what happens when you try stuff down the middle of the bed. If you try canine exercises you will have one knee 6-8 inches below the other. just doesnt work. Try to spoon with someone who is lying much below your level. Also had my keys or something in my jean pocket make a pin hole in my side . Woke up sore lying on the plastic frame. Mine was 4 years old when I made heat from it in the burn barrel. Just my 2 cents

Al,

Where there's a will, there's a way.

By the way, you are allowed to increase or decrease the firmness of the mattress by any amount, at any time, for any duration of time, for whatever purpose necessitates doing so.

Pretty simple solution.

Anybody know who makes a rock-hard conventional inner spring mattress these days?

A couple years back I decided to upgrade and bought a rock-hard memory foam mattress for $1000. Best sleep of my life, no pain in the morning, for 6 months. Then it turned to mush. I'd wake up in the morning totally encased in the thing.

I went back to the mattress dealer, and complained until they replaced it. This one lasted 3 months before it turned to mush.

Finally I ended up buying the hardest inner spring mattress I could find, but it's still too soft. My old bed was way firmer.

As you can see some people love them, some people hate them. Another point that Consumer Reports made was that some of the inexpensive air beds were made better than the Sleep Number beds. Like most things, you pays your money and takes your chances!

I have a California King, 1 ?" thick wooden framed water bed, minus the water part including the bag. The "springs" are ?" plywood sheet. On top of the wood is a $375 run of the mill, firm, non "Pillow Top" mattress with a $250, 2" miracle foam pad from JC Penney. Every morning when I get up I marvel at what a beautiful combination that makes for a superb night's sleep. The neat thing about the wooden frame is that you can sit on the side of the bed (while you are accumulating your faculties) and not break down the side of the mattress.

Steve, before you buy or don't buy, go to a sleep number store. You can try one out and make sure to take the wife. We have had ours over 10 years now and wouldn't go back to conventional spring/mattress combo.

Ill give you my honest opinion of mine. We searched the web, and made outr conclusiion to visit the store. I was inmpressed. After tryig each model we opted for the one with the memory foam top. It was very, very comfortable, and once I and my wife figured out our number, we both had a great nights sleep. After about 2 months, we noticed the memory foam top was sliding to the foot of the bed. Hoping something was wrong wit hthe bed, we called SN and the guy came out within a couple of days. He disaasembled the bed and checked everything over and found nothing wrong, but he did get the top back where it was suppose to be. After 6 months, and learning how to slide the top ourselves without taking the bed apart, it had gotten so uncomforable we could no longer sleep in it. We again contacted SN and opted to exchange it, for a small fee, wioth a pillow top bed. This bed slept much better, but eventaull the pillow top collapsed, which happens to all pillow tops, and at that point I said enough was enough. I have enough pain without having more caused by a mattress. We now have a Tempurpedic Cloud, and have the best nights sleep(s) Ive had in years! My wife no longer wakes up in pain, and I actually sleep through most nights. We have had ours for a little more than a year, and the top has not sank in, as many fear they will, and I dont get too hot or too cold, as some do, when I sleep. Will I recommend a SN bed, yes, but do not fall for the hype of the fanciest model. And as for what Al mentioned, just pump each side all the way up, problem solved!!

When buying a mattress always remember your 3 Ss : Steans & Foster , Simmons [beauty rest] Sealy [Posturpedic]. If it is not one of the 3 it won't last at all. Only the three s s make a quality that will last.

Years ago I noticed I had no trouble falling asleep in my reclining chair. Ditched the bed and stuck a recliner in my room. My back has had less trouble since.

We like ours. We've had it 10 years. I thought I would like the firm setting, but I set my side on 35 most of the time.

My girlfriend had one and I know exactly what you mean. I would wake up sore. We got a king with a regular mattress and its a lot better. BTW I laughed for 5 minutes after reading that... because I have been there too.

We had one for about 10 years and really liked it but the pillow top wore out and the plastic frame was breaking, they wanted over $800 for the top and I didn't give them time to quote a new frame.
The complete posturpedic mattress we replaced it with wasn't much higher and I sleep just fine on it to.
Gave the SC to my sister and her husband to go in their spare bedroom for grand kids to sleep on.

Hi Steve, I've had two different ones, A sleep number and a Comfort Air, And neither was worth a darn. After a while it feels like your sleeping in a "Hammock" and the ridge in the middle is tear able. Do your self a big favor and google either Co's Complaint site and you'll be shocked......Jim in N.M.

Don't know where you are at, we have a
store called Comfort King. They build
their mattresses in house. Can make
pretty much what ever you want. Current
one is a bit softer than the floor.
Love it.

We have two like them both. We built our own frame for one of them. It was made in two sections legs are 2x8's with 2x12's frame, used 1" plywood for "deck". Used what was left over from another project. This one sleeps the best. Maybe because its higher? My sitting is 95, Wife likes 35.

Son bought one and didn't like it. It had a money back guarantee but he had to pay the shipping to return it. I don't know what it was he didn't like.

My wife and I tried one of Costco's inexpensive ($400 for a queen size if I remember correctly) memory foam mattresses, and really liked it. Twenty year guarantee, and we haven't noticed any signs of it breaking down in the five years we've been sleeping on it. Our four children -- all in their 30s -- tried our mattress, and now three have their own memory foam mattresses.

I've had one for about 8 years and would not go back to a conventional mattress. The wife and I are both side sleepers but do not weigh the same. The big advantage for us is being able to set each side of the bed to different pressures. It also doesn't feel as hot as a memory foam mattress.

We bought the entry level model and should have paid more for the model with the pressure readout. It also seems to loose pressure over time or when the air temperature changes. Not a big deal, we just need to remember to increase the pressure again when the back pain comes back.

Jesse,

Read my reply below. You'll change your mind about your preference if you try it and it's a lot cheaper than the whole magic-memory foam bed.
Something is going on with mattresses these days. Hordes of retailer selling beds at ridiculous prices, some with 8 year interest free financing
(say anything about the markup).

When I was still flying, one of the hotels in Lubbock had those beds. They were uncomfortable at any setting after an hour or two and ultimately no better than a cheap air mattress for camping.

Simmons used to have a line of firm mattress, not sure if
still do.
The beds at the hotels we used in Mexico were like sleeping on
piece of plywood. No idea on brand.

got a very bad back, can sleep in my recliner some but most of the time I sleep on the floor, no sleep number bed for me

Had one for about 5 years and never liked it. Had several problems and we called the company but never got a satisfactory response. They didn't seem to care once they sold the product. Have gone back to a good traditional mattress and are much happier.

I've got crippling arthritis and will end up wheelchair bound. The sleep number has been a lifesaver. I can wake feeling kind of rested and can adjust it depending on what hurts more.

We bought a queen about 10 or so years ago. I never liked it, the air bag for each side was very narrow, and we are not overweight for our heights. When I turned toward the outside I would nearly fall out of bed. About 2 months after the warranty ran out the pump shorted out and blew the house breaker. Was very costly and blowing the breaker made me nervous. After we got it fixed we sold it. have no desire to have another one.
