Rebuilding Hydraulic Control Valves

Found a complete new old stock rebuild kit for my old 220 Massey Ferguson backhoe that hangs off the back of a 202. I'm wondering if using an old kit was a bad idea because I'm having a real hard time getting some of the back up washers installed without breaking them. They seem to be to be too brittle to stretch even a little bit. They came in an original box and all the bags that the parts were in were factory sealed.
I'm going to pick up some new back up washers today but does anyone have some tips for installing them. I've tried heating them up but that didn't help.

Hard to say? I have installed some old stock kits in the past and had good luck with warming the seals in hot water. Baum Hydraulics is an excellent source for needs like yours both in availability and price.

I thought about hot water, that's what I'll try with the rest of them. Got two done, only another 4 to go....
I ordered a cylinder rebuild kit from Baum and was impressed by the price and it got here quickly. That's next on the list once I get these controls all fixed up.

IF you're going through the trouble of rebuilding I would go get new orings. If they are breaking just stretching them on then just imagine when hot hydraulic oil starts hammering on them.

It's not the O-rings, it's the backup washers. I'm getting some new ones today. The O-rings are fine.

The new back up washers I bought today were much more supple and went on without issue. 2 down, 4 more to go......sigh
