New floor for equipment trailer

I need to replace wood floor on my equipment trailer. I have priced oak and kind of expensive. What other 2" thick planks could have used that would be cheaper. thanks

Depends on the Cross member spacing. Usually 16, or 24 inch; 12 inch is normally an option. Also the most weight You will put on it at any one time. On 12" You probably could use regular lumber, haul a 15,000lbs tractor, & be alright. 12" would on center, & if the cross member is 2" thick it means 10" 's of actual gap that the lumber would have to support. With wide 18.4-38 radials the tire would put weight on 3 2x6's.

I know 1 person who has a narrow front JD 4020 with fluid in the tires, & rear weights. He took 4 poplar boards out, & put 2 oak on each side where the rear wheels will sit. The rest of the bed is still poplar, & I am sure without asking He saved a bundle of money!

Many people replace their patio deck when start's looking unattractive. You can get the treated 2x material cheap or free for removing and hauling it off.

Cottonwood. Tough stuff.Wont split.I've loaded steel wheel tractors with lugs and had zero damage. However it needs to be dry. If put on wet,it will shrink and twist. Some guys here also use Aspen.Soft yet very tough.

Depending on how long your trailer is. It very hard to find boards that 20 ft long unless you get the cheap treated stuff. In some cases it's special order too.

Local guy has a sawmill, but he only likes to saw up shorter stuff. I gave him a popular log about 20 ft long. His skidder couldn't pick it up, He had to cut it into a 10 ft logs just to handle it.

My implement trailer, 18+2 it came with treated 18 ft 2x6's. Only problem is the 2 ft tail is slick when wet.

Most trailers in my neck of the woods the treated stuff lasts about 15 years.

When my trailer gets that old, needs new rubber, brakes, wood, good chance I'll sell it and buy a new one. I once fixed up an old used trailer. By the time I got done replacing everything it needed, I had almost the price of a new trailer.

I've been told to use Hackberry on an implement deck. Haven't had the opportunity to try it yet. anybody else heard of that one?

Some years ago when I did mine, I used hard maple bridge plank, and used a preservative on it. Never had any problem that I was aware of. You might try elm, if you have any of that where you live.

I used white oak. Had a 20 ft trailer. Needed 18 1/2 ft pieces. Local saw mill sawed them 19 ft. Had a little taper on the end. Cost me $120.00

Google: "Plastic Lumber" - (lumber pressure impregnated with Plastic). Lasts a long, long time. Works (cuts, nails, drills) just like regular lumber, but is impervious to insects, rot, mold, etc., and yet is still paintable.
