Garage Door Opener Motor

Has anyone been successful in swapping out a motor in one of these? It will take a little chop and change to the opener housing, but I've got a reversible motor for replacement.

I'd shy away from anything that isn't an exact swap.

If it's a typical residential unit instead of a costly commercial opener, it's simpler to just replace the whole unit for no more than they cost.

Guy across the road rigged his up with at least a 1 horse motor on it. No remote control you have to push the button on the side of the bldg. Switch has open, close and stop on the buttons. Another switch at another location turns the power to the opener on and off. Door is about 12X12 His opens and closes at about the maximum speed you would want. Got to watch the pulley sizes you use.

If the opener has all the safety reverse features, and electronic torque limiters in case there is a bind, (most residentials made in the last 30 years have them) the motor will need to have the same amp draw to work properly. Check the wiring carefully, the motors can be specialized for the drive.

If this is a commercial opener, it would be a more likely candidate. Residential units can be difficult to modify or service.

If it is a residential garage door opener, $200 will buy a decent new opener. It you stay within one brand you can often just replace the head unit and reuse the old mounting brackets. That saves a lot of measuring and installation time.

There's a LOT of info missing in your post.

A residential opener with a 3 wire cap run motor is a whole different animal than a commercial opener that has six, eight, or mebbee ten wires coming out of the motor. What'cha got, typing another line or two and telling the whole story costs no more than your vague post.

Take a look inside. They have plastic gears and sorockets in there. Can replace for very little if the motor is still working.
