Flaring tool

I need to get a flaring tool for making brake lines. I want one better than the HF type that I got fifteen years ago but I hope to not spend $200.00 on one either. It will need to make double and bubble flares. Suggestions?

I have one you can borrow. Never use it.
Don't remember where I got it. I think I
know where it's at, maybe?

(quoted from post at 07:07:48 08/06/16) Do a search for 'Eastwood.com' or Eastwood tools.

I buy things from Eastwood, but where you can compare their products seem for the most part to be on the high side, like the $200.00 flaing tool that I hope to not have to buy.

I've got an ATD-5483 set. $50 and up on the "web".

Works very well.

Look on E-Bay often you can find a name brand like Snap On or MATCO for decent money and unless you're going to use it 6-8 hours a day you'll have more tool than you could wear out in a
lifetime.

I have a Weatherhead.... but it's probably nearing that range you don't want to approach. When I had to double flare 1/2" steel line it was a
simple decision because the others just wouldn't hold it.... No regrets here despite it gets used once or twice a year.

A brand that can supply any replacement of the little plug tools that keep the end from collapsing . The little plug in piece on mine broke and despite being made in USA it looks like I have to buy a whole new kit as I can't get parts

I found the least costly way, and professional way, is to purchase the lines from NAPA. Might have to make a few bends to shorten. Use screen door spring over the tube to make those bends. Or take back and exchange later for proper part number.

If on SUNDAY, try auto zones.

Respecfully submitted.

Unless your double flaring tool is unusual, the dies or inserts or pretty generic and you can easily find a replacement.

GOOGLE "double flaring insert" or "double flaring die".

I've never had much luck double flareing steel tubeing, what's the trick? Long before the fitting is complete the steel tube cracks.

De-bur the cut end and file the end of the tube smooth and square, I use HP gear oil as a lube for the tube/die, and it usually works successfully.

Of course, oil needs to be flushed away 100% if for brake use.

What you want is a Double flare set. It has the little dies to make the tubing swell and then you use the center to roll the swelled area down into a flare shape so it won't crack like it does with a regular copper flaring tool.

I have a KD and a Sears. (I am not sure the Sears set is Craftsman or not.)

I had bad luck with the first KD set, but when I finally broke the first set (Identical as far as I could tell) that NAPA replaced it with worked fine. The difference was the first parallel dies would just not hold the tubing from slipping when pressed. But the replacement set would.

The Sears set uses a 1/2" wrench to turn the nuts and the center tool. It would probably work on a tube right on the car if necessary.

In my experience, you get what you pay for when you buy a flaring tool. Empty your wallet out and buy the best you can with whatever you have to spend. For a tool that does both double and bubble flares and ACTUALLY WORKS, you're going to be in the 200 dollar range.
