Bought these at h.d. The other day and never noticed the numbering until a few minutes ago when I was moving them. .99 per pack of 10.

Are you sure they are not just "seconds" Rulers that the imprint roller went over but it was out of ink. Have seen stuff kind of like that before. Going down I-95 in the Carolinas you go past the Canon Towel store. Can buy Seconds of towels with minor defects in them. Who cares, you can buy towels by the pound! Bought a bunch that had a tiny bit extra of salvage along one edge. Very good price.

We just used a smooth stick that Dad had carved some notches in. Wonder what ever happened to that stick?

What I like to use is steel strapping I get for free at the lumber yard. Cut a chunk so it hits bottom, put a curl at the top so it will hang in the opening with the cap on. Before you start work, pull the cap and "gauge" and see what you have. If the cap won't let you hang it in the spout, then make a loop at the end and secure with some tape. A bit of baler twine or wire in the loop and hang it someplace on the tractor it won't fall from.
