Welder extension cards vs longer leads cost

Longer leads 50 ft on eBay 32 dollars . H-F ground clamp 13.99 , Tweco top quality electrode holder35.36 . ends for cables to plug in welder USA 17.35 each. 32+13.99+ 34.74= 80.73 8/3 cord with made up ends 25 ft long 58 dollars cheapest on net. The cord comes with rubber rough service ends not breakable bakelite. So if you shop the net the price could be real close if you use imported ends to adapt the cable to the welder. Each price scenario I listed moves the machine 25 feet . [80.73 vs 58 dollars]{ Miller or somebody wants to sell an extension cord for 440 bucks at Cyberweld big variation in pricing .] The Harbor ground clamp is fine ,the electrode holder you need to go to the welding supply. But cheaper to move the machine by cord.

I guess I'm lucky, I have both, mostly from dumpster diving! My stinger is somewhat longer that the ground, I think that's ok. I have used jumper cables for extending the ground.

Shoot I did it the cheap way when I needed longer cables. I got 100 feet cut tha tin half so as to extend both leads 50 feet then removed the clap and spliced it and did the same on the other one so all it cost me was the cable and some heat shrink to cover the splices

Check prices on ebay for a pre made RV extension cord, 8g copper. You can get 3 or 4 wire cords. Prices vary but way under 440 bucks. They come in various lengths, molded RV ends. Then you may have to chance the end of welder power cord to RV. Seems like an eazy fix.

Another thought. Power company feeds your transformer with high voltage low amps and small gauge wire. Out of transformer is lower voltage higher amps and more expensive wire. Isn't a welder the same? Power wire to welder is smaller gauge than the wires with clamp and holder which have more current?

Bingo, George.

All else equal, it will always be cheaper to extend the primary welder cord than the electrode cables. Much less copper is needed.

If you read my post the cord was 59 dollars the 440 cord was from Miller on Cyberweld. If you used imported adapters for the welder the cost would be almost the same for extending either way.

I am making a new set of leads without cannabilizing the old ones. If you ruin the old leads you could deduct the price of scrap for them.

I made a 50 foot primary extension cord for my welder for the cost of the end plugs and a handful of zip ties. The local power co-op guy had a 100' coil of overhead aluminum triplex that they had taken down on a service upgrade. It was off of a 60 amp service, and he was glad to get it off of his truck. I didn't want a bare neutral (or ground - not to start an argument) so I cut the length in half and used three insulated conductors for a 50' finished length. I don't have an electrical code book in hand, but I can assure you that it is in violation, since it is three insulated conductors without a protective jacket. That may be a deal breaker for you.

Ruin?

The ground clamp and electrode holders simply unbolt from their leads, leaving the leads perfectly reusable later should you decide the longer leads are too much of a hassle.
