Found under old porch. 18 inch Cederholm MFG Co steel measuring wheel. Has read out on handle. I think its a D1 model but not sure and it works but think its to measure yards but it takes 5 feet to move digits. Could be gear on 18 measure wheel is wore inside? Any one know about these tools, how old and it it worth anything? Having trouble getting info on this tool and tried to call Company and phone is not in service. DJD.

(quoted from post at 18:35:21 07/30/16) Thank you. What does a tenth of a chain mean? Is it a tenth of and acre? DJD.

A chain (ch) is a unit of length. It measures 66 feet, or 22 yards, or 100 links,[1] or 4 rods (20.1168 m). There are 10 chains in a furlong, and 80 chains in one statute mile. An acre is the area of 10 square chains (that is, an area of one chain by one furlong). The chain has been used for several centuries in Britain and in some other countries influenced by British practice.

You could look it up.

In surveying, a chain is 66 feet. So a tenth is 6.6 feet. Chain is a unit of linear measure. Acre is a unit of area.

so now that others have "read" the internet to you, I will gove you useful information. Roll it down ns side of a rectangle of land and note number of revolutions. Then repeat for ew. Then multiply ns number by ew number and divide product by 1000 and you have acreage of that restangle of land.

Steel wheel is 18 inches across but five feet circumference. One complete turn of the wheel is one digit 5'. I wonder why in 5' increments not 6.6. I do understand its use but not how it was figured when it was made in a US tool. If it takes 6.6 to make a chain" why a measure of 5 feet per digit? DJD.

(quoted from post at 00:05:59 08/01/16) I don't understand how a diameter of 18" gives a circumference of 5 feet. 18" x 3.14 = 56.52
inches.
.71 is closer to 5 than it is to 6.6, maybe?

The steel wheel is 18 inches across but" the circumference is 5 feet, every turn of the wheel is 5 feet and adds one digit? DJD.

(quoted from post at 14:29:26 08/01/16) Useless. Measure it with your phone.
I do not know about Measuring it with my phone but every turn of the wheel is 5 feet to the quarter inch. Every turn of the wheel is one digit. Like i had said the drive gear or the digit read out may be wore. Not a big deal as i just wanted to know something about it AND " i thank every one for all there help and info. Going to take to a Antique dealer and old timer. DJD.

Try this: it is a "special order" unit for a land salesman that shorts you on acerage."
