Stihl brush cutter

My rant for the day! My father bought this brush cutter-weed eater about 30 years ago, he has been gone 24 now. This is the second time the gas cap has broken! It has never been worked on, all original carburetor parts and gas lines, and it started right up. To the best of my knowledge it has never had ethanol gas put in it. How can such a good machine have such junky gas caps? The lid off an orange juice bottle would be better, and I think the one I bought was over $15, never again! I will figure something out!

Wow 30 years old and. Only on your second gas cap! :) that's only a dollar a year in maintainance. Pretty darn good .
Cheers

I still have a couple of FS80 engines. Came off of weed-trimmers years ago and are now on gas-drills for tapping sugar maple trees. I have replaced many, many gas caps over the past 30, maybe 40 years (can't remember). Blame whatever Japanese company built these things for Stihl.

Russ, a friend of mine in Burnsville made one for his 1946 outboard motor, maybe a Johnson. It was made out of aluminum and I think he just used his lathe. He will never need another.

I used to have the use of a lathe before I retired, sometimes I miss my job! I just can't justify buying one, I need it so seldom, and I don't really have room for one. I am going to buy a cork that fits and put a small tube in it for a vent. The plastic bag worked today!

Russ it seems like the top just pops off , too tight maybe ?
Still if the threads are still OK then a metal cap stuck onto them with fuel resistant adhesive might just be the answer.

You should try putting fuel in a ms200 chain saw. That gas cap makes those flip ring contraptions on that saw look reasonable. Stihl should be drawn and quartered for some of their caps.

I have a Sears Brushcutter my Dad bought in the late 70's that I dug out and got running again a coup, etc months ago. Runs good but the gas cap is cracked. Sadly I cannot find one. Most carts are no longer available and my only hope now is finding a used one somewhere. Other caps do not fit it.

I found Seal All to be a good glue that stands up to gas. Got a 1 oz tube from Menards $3. Repaired a few gas can spouts. I too used a plastic bottle and cap. The fix works well. So what if I fix doesn't last, the original plastic spout didn't last that long either.

BTW, where I live I have no choice, all the gas sold at gas stations is EPA formulated fuel, 10% ethanol. Has been that way for a very long time too.

If you have no ethanol in your gas, you must be far from a large city. geo.

From some of your past posts, maybe years ago, I thought you had a lathe. I have always wanted a lathe, but like you I don't really have the room either.

You have that right. I don't know how many hours I've wasted on that d^&( thing. I've learned that you can not overfill these by even a little bit and have it close properly.
