mine did it by accident. i hit the wrong button. not bad to use, no real problems. if you dont get the free upgrade, they will charge for it pretty soon.

Do you have to do anything with files and folders do they all work when its done ? I have windows 7 now.

I did the download. Looks different and seems a little faster. Had one update already. I like the new solitare games but they pester you with ads for upgrades.

No. If you have a program like Quicken, back it up first because 10 will screw it up to no end. If you use your computer to download pictures from a camera and post them here, say goodbye to that. I haven't been able to download a new picture since that cancer downloaded itself to my computer on June 9th.
If you're using Explorer to get on here, find somebody who'll tell you how to get that icon back on your taskbar because the E that looks like the Explorer icon won't be the right one anymore. It'll take you to a new browser that won't let you set your own homepage. You'll have to take the one that comes with that browser.

As for running faster? HUH! What a joke. Mine was slower than dialup for at least 6 weeks before it started picking up speed.

Do what you want to do,but remember who warned you before you made that mistake.

Yes, do it. No big deal. You'll have a system that Microsoft will support into the future. I've had it for several months and it's good. I, as rrlund has expressed, had issues initially with my photos but they are all there, just in a different place. There is a short learning curve but my grandson led me by the hand.

Maybe I'll find the time this winter to figure that worthless garbage program out,but in the mean time,it'd sure be nice to be able to sit down and use this thing like I used to,but anybody who expects it to be even remotely like 7 is dead wrong and is in for a long frustrating experience.

I was told it does not have media center I run 7 and use media center all the time I have a tuner card for over the air tv which works great with media center.

IF you have an AMD processor you will be sorry you ever herd of Windows 10. I had to replace my computer after trying to get everything to work correctly, it never would, and Microsoft is aware of the problem. Since I got my new computer, it works flawlessly.

Have tried to download it. So far, all it does is ties up my computer by the hour "starting download" and the circle of dots keeps goin round.

10 has automatic updates from MS that you can't stop. If the computer is plugged into the internet, it will turn itself on and connect to MS and start downloading all kinds of worthless files that some H1-B at MS thinks are important. I didn't know this when I got a new 10 netbook, and it ate $20 worth of my data in 3 nights; and I wasn't using the computer! It was all MS BS.

I've been looking for some way to stop it, but no luck so far.

Don't do it! I tried it on my wifes, it was horrid. Had to get a new computer and it came with 10. I can hardly connect to the internet and I've fixed my old one, so now I have a new, worthless computer. I'm going to load Linux on it and try that. Most of Win 10 is taken up with what appear to be stuff they want you to buy, shopping apps, for pay movie apps, crap like that. It might be fine for a 20 something metro-se xual, but it stinks for a guy like me that just wants to do his banking, read about tractors and the news and watch a movie every now and then.

I repeat, Windows 10 sucks swamp water!

I have it(win 10) on a 3 month old computer that was special ordered with win 7 and on a 10 year old laptop that originally had windows 7. Both computers work better with Windows 10. You only have a few days, the end of the month to get the upgrade for free, after that it will cost you near to over $100.

Rather than down load the "free" Windows 10 program I down loaded a "free" program that blocks Window 10 from down loading. The support deadline for windows 8 is 2023. That is seven years from now. I never have had a computer last more than 4-5 years and this one is already two years old. So even though I do not like windows 8 near as well as XP I will keep it over Windows 10. I think many will find the intrusion of Microsoft into your computing world to be a major turn off. I think this will back fire over the long term for Microsoft. I really hope Microsoft gets in trouble so there will be other options for computer operating systems.

I used to be a supporter of Microsoft's products but that has ended. So now I am a reluctant user of their products. This change may seem minor but it makes me look at other options before I will try anything "new" from Microsoft.

It was time , so I bought a new Dell with win10 installed . I was already using Chrome on the old one , so I installed that too. And just like Randy , I can't do anything with my pictures in "My Pictures" . I see them , but can't email or post them . I had a tech tell me over the phone a method to email , but it was only effective for one at a time, and kind of a convoluted process....I have some pix in Google pix , but they installed themselves from a picasa file , and I can't add to or email them either. Great progress !!

Just remember all you do on your computer is shared with MS. They say you can turn that feature off, but can you really?? Everything is in the cloud nowadays, who knows who can access your info, or if you can get it back when needed.

Guys, if you've got an outdated computer that Windows is making extremely slow and you use it mainly as an internet cruiser, load up Linux or Ubuntu.
My wife is a computer programmer for a super-large corporation that you've all heard of and she works from home. Since we are so rural, our internet speed isn't as fast as we like, but it's all we've got and we can't improve on it. Anyway, her company just gave her a brand new computer that has Windows 10 on it. At peak-usage times, I'm on the computer, one of my kids is on the computer and my wife is on the computer working. There are several times a day that suddenly our download speed just almost drops to zero. At first we thought we had a router problem, but our internet tech said it was okay. He then found out that her computer has Windows 10 on it and he immediately asked us if we have download problems with the Windows 10 computer shut off. We hadn't thought of it before, but it was true. We have no download problems with my wife is not working. Now perhaps Windows 10 is somehow doing it to their faulty software, but he claims Windows 10 is causing all kinds of download problems and we didn't have any before we got a Windows 10 computer. We also don't have any problems with her computer shut down.
Somehow, someway, our Windows 10 is killing our download speeds. I know there are a bunch of naysayers out there, and we haven't figured out how it's doing it yet, but it's doing it. If we find out a solution, I'll post back and explain what it was.
Posted from a computer using Ubuntu OS, BTW.

Gambles, if the win 10 machine is downloading it's brains out getting more crap from MS, that would use all your bandwidth and slow everything else to a crawl. My netbook was downloading and I couldn't see any icon or any other indication it was downloading. See if you can tell if the 10 box is connected to MS when you're slow.

When I had a Vista machine for a month before it got stolen, all the crapware Dell installed was all trying to connect back to the home site and I couldn't do anything on the net until I got rid of all the auto updating....

As pointed out, everything that you do with Windows 10 is shared with the Microsoft cloud, good, bad, or not. If you're open or ok with putting EVERYTHING that you do out there, then go for it. When it comes to the cloud, I have customers that tell me flatly as a phone guy that they won't do it and want nothing to do with it because their information, data is proprietary and they don't want it out there to be hacked by anyone, including the government. The latter is my biggest fear about Windows 10. The government tells carriers for instance that they (we) MUST make at least records of all calls available to them under threat of prosecution if they (we) don't and threat of prosecution if they (we) inform their (our) customer users. Now Microsoft comes out with an OS that puts everything that all of its users do (banking, everything) out into the cloud at the same time our government goes after control and access of who does and says what on the internet and I would assume access to their cloud based software, OS. No thanks. But then again, I don't know what that pokey man thing is either, and I'm not interested in becoming part of the herd on that either. I'm not real keen on anyone that I don't know walking up unsolicited and putting their arms around me and offering to help me out on anything. I'm even less keen on having the same not bother to ask, but just telling me that I must...for my own good.

Good luck from a Linux, Ubuntu, and even an unauthorized Windows XP SP4 user.

Mark

I went from 8 to 10 on my work computer, I love it. Windows 8 never seemed right to me, it's a system for smart phones.

Windows 10 came with Microsoft Edge as search engine. I tried it and it is faster than Google. By the way, if you think Microsoft is highly political, research google.

I put little out "on the cloud" I save 95% of my stuff on my computer. I only use the cloud when it won't fit on a usb drive or I need to move it from one computer to another.

It seems to be a great system in all regards. I can find more drivers for old equipment.

Just do this, it only works for wireless connections (wired need to be converted to wireless), but it will stop automatic update downloads until you click the notification.

I saw software that did this, but haven't tried it out on anyone's computer yet to see how it works (I don't use Windows myself). There are others to stop the spying as well. Here's the one that says it can disable updates, but I don't know what's involved, or how easy it is to manually initiate their download when needed.

We had windows XP 32 bit. had purchased Print shop, Streets and trips and office. Got new computer 64bit. these programs won't run so i bought them again in 64 bit and they worked fine. downloaded win 10 and none of these run. Streets and trips (MSOFT) no longer supports program so it won't run but you can still buy their program. Print shop 64 bit won't run and they are not supporting their program either. Office was preloaded on this computer but not recognized by win 10 and i have the key. win 10 had many crashes on this machine and could not find where to launch many of the apps. I reverted back in under 30 days so my machine is back to normal and i keep my programs. win 7 pro is their best os for me!

I like w-10 no problems. What amazed me was absolutly no kind human to human support. ALL information had to be read and understood online. No commuinty college intorduction classes no senior center help classes, NOTHING. I found there is some language translation to be overcome as "This" is now called "That" and there is a feature called "Libraries" that to this day NO ONE understands or can make work you have do something to your drive that's dangerous (our IT guy did not want any part of that) (I guess it's kinda like making multiple files as a short cut). Other than a few more screen savers and MS's stock going up I don't know what all the fuss is about. bjr

My policy is "if it isn't broke, don't fix it."
Now, having said that, I finally reached a point that XP would no longer do the job for me. Dead ended browsers and such. Don't like Chrome, not wild about Firefox.
So, I did move up to Windows 7. Seems to work OK. Since 7 isn't broke, I see no urgency to move up to Vista,8, or 10. I'm sure it works just fine, but I am not yet interested.
Lack of a means to re-install after the end of the "free" upgrade is a deal breaker for me. I want a clear path to recovery after a hard disk crash or a motherboard failure.

Sooner or later, folks will wise up to the whole "cloud" thing. More smoke and mirrors to obscure the REAL agenda. There may yet come a time when every computer user in the world will be sending off a monthly payment to MS, Apple, or some other big player in the computing field.

All the fuss is about an operating system unlike anything I've ever used. I bought my first desktop computer for keeping farm records in 1991. All the upgrades to Microsoft drivers over the years have pretty much just been minor tweeks and improvements to the same old system. Going from 7 to 10 is like having eaten with a fork and spoon all your life and all of a sudden having to eat with chopsticks.
I remember the aggravation and sleepless nights when trying to learn how to run a computer from reading a manual when I got that first one. 10 is that whole exasperating experience all over again.
If anybody else remembers it and hasn't been infected with 10 yet, good luck. I hope you had a lot of fun the first time around.

Windows 10 is an Internet bandwidth hog that is moving data back and forth to micro soft or somewhere that 7 doesn't move. There probably isn't anything on that computer that MS or any three letter government agency doesn't know about if they want to.

I have had windows 10, & 10.1 almost since its beginning, I still wish to this day I had went with 7 instead. I have so many problems with 10 I am not going to bother explaining at this time!

Upgraded wife's laptop from Windows 8; the ONLY problem was that it wanted to use Microsoft Edge for a browser. She needs Explorer in order to log on the hospital's Citrix server. Turns out IE11 comes with Windows 10; just that it is hidden. If you type in Internet explorer it will find it right away and all you have to do then is pin to your start menu. All her favorites, etc were still there.

Now she actually likes it, because it no longer freezes up when she clicks on a website. She used to have to restart it sometimes several times a day. No more. So here's a vote of support.

My son did mine and my work computer. The computer at work is cheap junk and it runs OK. You do want to do a back up before you start to be on the safe side. You also want to have enough memory. If you don't use a microsoft browser you can still load google chrome. Mozzila doesn't work very well at this time. The way I see it sooner or later you will have to upgrade and it won't be free any more. You may need to update some drivers for devices to make them work.

Get it done. I once worked with a guy who said he would never move off Windows 3.1. Ironically he worked in IT, and was trying to hold an entire business back in the stone ages, and he was sure that Windows 98 was of the devil. Sounds familiar. No, I do not work or get paid from Microsoft, but I do work in IT, and sooner or later you will move on either due to hardware or software issues. Oh, and I never recommend doing an upgrade......wipe the drive and fresh install is always best.

I had win 3.1, and 98. Used 98 for 10 years, but then I had to upgrade? to 8. And I learn't 15 years ago; NEVER UPGRADE! Use it until it just won't work anymore, like 98 in 2010. Everytime I upgraded, things that were working, no longer worked. I wish there was some OP that wasn't Apple or MS, that didn't require a post graduate computer geek to use...

This. I am suspicious of why MS is giving something for free. Unless they plan to charge for it somehow. Also to play Solitaire on win 10 you have to pay now.

No you don't. I play it constantly on 10 at work, uh, in my spare time, when I'm not doing anything at lunch time, yea, that's its!

Seriously, I have it here at home and at work and play all of the card games a lot and have never been asked to pay.

If MS is so arrogant to think that they can give 10 away for free then turn around and somehow start charging for part or all of it, they've got a heaping dose of reality headed their way. It will backfire instantly on them in public outcry the likes of which has never been seen before on this planet.

oops! I apologize for the misinformation.

I have no doubt Microsoft will at some point in the future attempt some sort of monthly/yearly subscription fee for Windows, at least for some features, maybe not the whole os, but possible since they already do that for businesses/some Office versions.

As I said before, you can "reserve" your copy of Windows 10 now. Your stuff is backed up, so upgrade to 10 now, then when you don't like it, roll back to 7, back like you started. This will reserve your Windows 10 activation for that computer, just as if you bought a key. Only cost is a little time. I'd suggest that to anyone, something may come up that requires 10, doesn't hurt to have a free activation on reserve if needed if you use Windows.

It will activate under whatever license you have now. If you have a full retail install you bought separate from a computer, you can move it to another computer. If it came installed on your computer, it's tied to that computer/hardware.

You can clean install with a blank hard drive now, just use a Windows 7/8 key, it will convert to a 10 key, after the cut off date you reinstall with no cost, again, just as if you bought the key. After the cutoff, it will be like it was a year ago, and pretty much since Windows was first offered, you just buy a key/software, you just have to make your own install disk that you download from Microsoft for free. The difference is people can get the activation for free now. All backup/reinstalling will be the same as it was before, as long as you have a key or activated on the computer you are working on (free or paid key).

We have never been able to purchase our own MS software, only the rights to use it. Now with some Mac Office Applications MS wants consumers to pay a month by Month lease to use Mac Office .
