Speeco Pump on log splitter

Hi folks, no questions just some info I discovered today. I made a log splitter that hooks to my three point and is powered by my pto shaft. I used a Speeco 16 GPM pump. Did fine last season and I broke it out this week to find the pump leaking from the "head". Couldn't find any info or rebuild kits so I took it apart. It does have a thin o ring which would leak under pressure. I cleaned everything and used a Fel Pro product called Anaerobolic sealant. It worked. Three hours of hard core stuff later it is still doing fine. Just the info. Enjoy your weekend.

Is your reservoir vented?

Lack of a vent can cause case pressure or vacuum on the pump. Either will cause premature seal failure

Hey Steve, yes it is vented and I'm using a "power beyond" valve so I think I'd over pressured the pump. I'm splitting some pretty nasty oak and pecan that had to be quartered just so I could pick it up onto the splitter. At 16 gpm I consider the pump to be "low-mid power" and was impressed at some of the stuff it would go through. When it meets a really tough piece it will squeal for a second so I back off. In this case I noticed it was lacking in power but still acting fine. I looked at it with a load and saw fluid kinda stream from the end/head. With no luck finding info I broke it down for a look. The above steps have at least bought me more time so maybe it'll help someone else. The o ring it had sits in an odd shaped recess but goes back to round when removed so it perhaps could be found at a parts house. There are two copper laid plates on either side of the gears in the head, these plates have a recess on the backside which has another odd shaped o ring but it is not continuous and is specific to this application. It looks like a handlebar moustache. I found no hint of a rebuild kit so be careful with these o rings. Hope this helps. Andy
