032 Stihl chain saw

I have a 032 av stihl chain saw that has no spark. It 's hard finding parts for older stihl chain saws
I read someplace that you can do away with points and condenser, and use a ignition module .Does anybody have
opinions about using this module?Do they work good?

Help I ndiana George,

Clean the points, first with a file. Then draw paper between them until the paper comes out clean. Then gap the them. Whom knows! You might get lucky,

Guido.

Hi Guido
I did clean the points but no luck.I have own this saw for about 10 years ,never change the points.
So think is time for new points.

I have a 038 AV that I rebuilt a few years ago. IIRC, the is a special tool that slides down over the crankshaft to position your points so you can set gap.

Do you have to remove the magneto to get access to your points?

Yes I did and I know about the special tool you need to adjust the points. My question is have you heard about the
ignition module or chip that does away with points and condenser.I have seen a video showing on how to do it This
module replaces the points and condenser

Yes, I was going to installEI on my saw/ I couldnt find one for the 038AV,

The reviews of EI for saws was very good.

I have installed modules twice in the last 8 years on Stihls and had good results both times. Both times the local stihl dealer had the module in stock.

This assumes your coil is still good, and your points/condenser setup is the trouble.

I am also thinking you can use the universal module that is available from Rotary or Oregon and get good results, If you can get to fit in there somehow.

I am also thinking that on at least one of those repairs required it required that I remove the flywheel and take one of the tiny screws off the points to hold the wire to the new module. That tiny screw is nowhere to be had locally. I don't know if this applies to your 038 or not.

I've got an 032 sitting around someplace that died in the middle of the woods. The 032 was a poorly designed saw that had a LOT of problems. As soon as you got one thing to work, another one failed. It was only on the market for 2-3 years before Stihl stopped making them. I just gave up on it & I was a Stihl dealer back then (1985). My advice is to junk it & get a newer saw. Bar, chain, sprocket will still fit modern saws of that size.

Those were good saws I still have one. Mine has electronic ign. IIRC . They built them both ways. Should be able to change it over. Many saw shops keep used saws for parts.

Yep, poorly designed, so much so that my 032 AV that I bought new in 1977 is still working. Yep, so poorly designed that I had to put a carb and crank seals in her two years ago. WOW, only got 33 years service at that point. Yep, so poorly designed that it still outcuts my two year old Husky 450. (Husky used while 032 was down for repair).

Now, your gona say "I didn't use it much", cut around eight cords of firewood for 10 years, when I was burning wood for heat source. Yep, poorly designed :)

I have an 066 Magnum saw that would no start I took it to a good friend who used to work on those small engines at the University here. The coil was out and come to find out the flywheel has to be replaced as well. Finding the flywheel is the problem. I am searching now to try and find the flywheel. This saw is the best saw I have ever layed my hands on I bought it new 30 years back. I have talked to 2 dealers who say I need to trade it in on a new saw. They must want it for a reason!!!!

(quoted from post at 21:38:39 07/21/16) . The 032 was a poorly designed saw that had a LOT of problems.
Nothing wrong with these saws, I have a 038 mag and love it. 2-strokes and ignition modules have a long history together. Had a few dirtbikes back in the day where the ignition quit. Then I had some for years that never quit. Vibration, heat-up/cool-down, and moisture will take it's toll on them. Not uncommon for them to go bad.

Could be just the condenser. My old weedeater started cutting out after 15 minutes. Let it set a while it would run another 5 and quit. I asked the guy at the shop if it was the coil and he shrugged. I spent $40 on a new coil and it did the same thing. A friend told me to try the condenser. I still have the new coil, never needed it and never went back to that shop.

I changed my Stihl 028 over to a Solid State Ignition Module. Best thing I ever did and cheap to do, cost under $20. It starts so much easier, try it !! You will be glad you did..
