Metal shavings around the drill press are a pain to clean up, either you get them stuck in your gloves or use a magnet and then try to pull them off. At work they have these magnets that you pull the handle out and it releases the metal. I looked on Amazon and found this one. I used it today and it works GREAT!!!!! It will pick up shavings from a couple inches away and then pull the rod out and they just fall off. Chris

I've got a big magnet I pulled out of a set of high-dollar car speakers that a junkyard buddy had. Tapped it for a piece of allthread to use as an indicator holder, and it works fine for that, but I also use it for cleanup--just put it in a "red solo cup" or something similar and the shavings around the drill, mill, and lathe will stick to it, then hold it over the garbage and pull the magnet off the bottom of the cup and they'll fall away.

Looks like a handy tool to have around the shop but it really doesn't look like it would be too hard to make.
A piece of aluminum pipe, a cow magnet, a piece of brazing rod or any rod to attach to the magnet, a knob to attach to the rod, anything to plug one end, and you have one for a lot less than what they charge. No special tools needed to build one. You could even have your wife make one for you..

My drill press is three feet from one garage door. Easy to blow it off with 4 inch air nozzle and then "sweep" it ouy with 4 foot Air tube gun.

(quoted from post at 02:12:56 07/19/16) way to pricey.......

I feel like there is more and more cheap folks around these days.......or is it the economy? Haven't figured it out. If I want it, I buy it.

(quoted from post at 23:46:40 07/19/16) Confess that I wrap a paper towel around the magnet, pick up the shavings, and peal the towel away with the trash.

Now that is a pretty good idea!

Ditto here on the paper towel. Although my wife thinks that wear my work boots in the house just to let her pick up the crap that comes off of them.

What does the paper towel sound like when you "peal" it?
