Stihl Leaf Blower

I have a Stihl Leaf blower at work that I use many times a week. Today it would not rev up, acted like it was under a huge load. Talk to a local fellow that tinkers with small engines. He said to pull the screen out of the muffler and cut the end off. Well did pull the screen out but I chose to clean rather than cut the end off. After a good cleaning the blower ran like new again. What is the purpose of this screen? Would it be OK to cut it the fellow advised?

Spark arrestor. Keeps hot carbon particles from igniting dry leaves and grass. Will run fine without it, your call. Being as it's for work and under osha rules, I'd think about it. But what are the chances of them looking at it? Clean once every 2 or 3 years, big deal. Could just spray inside muffler with carb clean every 3 or 4 weeks, (when it's cool), pour it out and put it away.

The screen is a spark arrestor. I just clean them and leave them in. You do not want sparks around dry leaves and such when using the blower. I would not cut it.

I've experienced that same problem with those type engines, any exhaust restriction really chokes them down, I don't want to go on record of telling you to remove any factory safety device, but I know this "dude" who did that and had no problems lol

I agree, just clean it and put it back in.

The exhaust restriction on blowers also acts as a rev limiter. Altering it can cause the engine to spin the impeller faster than it was intended, something bad can happen!

Are you using the correct oil mix? Screen clogging can be a result of too much or the wrong type oil.
