Repurposing bicycle wheels

Has there been bicycle wheel shafts made to cantilever the wheel some way instead of the standard "U" fork needed? Has anyone come up with a solution? Appreciate your suggestions. Leo

It doesn't have to be a fork, like the front of a bicycle. I am working on building an aluminum trailer to haul behind my bicycle to carry my canoe. I bought one a couple of
years ago but I think this one will work better. I made a frame out of angle, a piece across the front and one across the back, connected by four smaller pieces of angle, ne
on each side of each wheel. I'll post a picture if what I've said doesn't make sense.

As I recall, the bearings on a bicycle hub are held together by nuts on the threaded axle. I suppose you could get a longer threaded rod to use, but it would probably bend. Might be better off getting different wheels that are pressed together and use a stronger axle.

I have used bike wheel for many things. What I do is build a simple box sort of frame so I have 2 places both inside and out side to bolt he wheel on. The outer part of the box also bolts one so one can remove the wheel when needed. Built a garden cart years go that way since I did not want to spend the $$ that buy one would cost me. Still have it but have not used it in years

I have a trailer made to be towed by a bicycle, fitted with 24 inch wheelchair wheels. The trailer is rated for 300 lb. I've never tried to tow anything near 300 lb. Getting that much weight started wouldn't be too hard but I think stopping it would be impossible! 24 inch wheelchair tires and rims are not the same size as 24 inchers for a bicycle. They are not interchangeable. If you get wheelchair hubs, you could build up any size wheel you want on them.

I would like to use the wheels on lawn carts or large wheel light duty wagons. Being member of a family of "don't throw anything away, you might could use it someday" I ended up with left over bicycle wheels from triplet grandchildren's evolving rides. Little trainer bikes, medium sized wheels, larger old bike wheels!
Thanks everyone, but looks like U-shaped frames might work, but the work to build, bend, align holes, slots, might make buying those larger, solid tire wheels with 3/4 dia axles more attractive. Just checkin.............Leo

The way I did mine was make a H sort of bracket on the out side and cap off the legs of the H to have a hole for the out side nut and the cross bar of the H has a hole in it for the inner hole. If it wasn't so hot and the thing was not up in the iron pile I could pull it out and get a picture of it. My wife at that time wanted to fill it with dirt and grow flowers in it

I have made 4 wheel carts using 20-24 inch bicycle wheels. Use them almost daily.Pulls easy & will haul a heavy load. Much better than game cart for hunting. Also replaced small wheels that came with 25 gallon weed sprayer with bike wheels , which are better for rough ground & in the woods.

Here is a picture of the bike trailer I am currently working on. I have made the brackets to connect the tongue to the trailer but have not mounted them yet. I got the
aluminum from metalremnantsinc on ebay which has lots of it and offers free shipping on orders over $100. I used 6061 so it would be plenty strong enough for long term
use.

Keep in mind the design of a bicycle wheel. It's made to be strongest when the load force is in a plane directly through the diameter of the wheel. Side forces are destructive. I used bicycle wheels for a torch cart many years ago. The first time I rolled it on a side slope, it started popping spokes. I made a low budget temporary fix that has become permanent. It's hard to see, but the last pic shows how each wheel is mounted individually so the cart will corner easily. Cheap, cheap, cheap
