Kohler generator problem

I have a 17kw Kohler genset tied in to my house. When it starts it will run real slow and after about 10 seconds shut down, flashing a code of low voltage. I assume the low voltage is because it is running so slow. It seems like it isn't getting enough fuel. I took fuel hose off at the LP gas regulator, PN A-227531 and I couldn't feel or smell gas when cranking engine.I unhooked supply gas line and it has good gas pressure. Gas cutoff solenoid clicks like it is working when power is supplied. I suspect the LP gas regulator is bad. The only one I can find online is $173. Not wanting to throw parts at it if not sure. Any ideas out there?

Have you called Kohler customer service?

I have a 20KW Kohler whole house genset. It has been trouble free so far (2 years) but I had glitches getting it properly set up. The folks at Kohler were very helpful.

From my records, the phone number is 920-803-3928. Ask for Matt (assuming that he is still there and in the same capacity). He is knowledgeable and helpful. He will need your genset model number and serial number.

FWIW, I would suspect the controller or governor rather than the regulator, but this is just an educated guess.

Look the governor linkage over. There should be a throttle plate behind the LP regulator. It should be spring loaded to the open position with the engine off. Is it stuck, or something holding it from opening, mud dauber nest, mouse nest?

If you suspect it is not getting enough fuel, put some gasoline in a oil squirt can, get it running, give a shot of gas into the air intake, see if the speed comes up. That will prove if it is lack of fuel.

Just sent an e-mail to Kohler tech spt. Will also try the gasoline squirt, would starting fluid work better? I will post results' thanks for the replies.

Check the vents on the regulator. Bugs love to stop them up with nest. Stops the regulator from giving the engine enough gas to run. Never use starting fluid.

My high and low pressure LP gas regulators have metallic particle filtration on any holes used for venting. The Generac power unit has screens over the air inlet and outlets with the rest of the unit being sealed and soundproofed.

Going to bet if the Kohler is like the Generac, dirt dobbers (of which we have more than our fair share down here) aren't the culprit.
