Valve Grinding Liquid

I picked up an old Black and Decker valve resurfacing machine. What type of fluid should I use in the machine? Any thoughts are appreciated. Bruce

504- I think he is talking about a resurfacing machine. I had Souix back in the 1990's but cannot remember the type of fluid I used for the life of me.....

504:

I think he is referring to the coolant used on the grinding stones. As for lapping the valve into the seat, I've always used plain ordinary TOOTHPASTE; it takes longer than using lapping compound (paste) , but it produces a much smoother finish.

Go to Goodson.com, part # VGO-10 valve refacer grinding oil. They have all sorts of engine rebuilding supplies and tools.

If you're talking about the coolant for keeping the valve cool, and also to carry away the debris, windshield washer fluid will work. May not be ideal, but it works.

Water soluble oil sounds right to me. Not sure if I heard that back in 1970 in auto shop or somewhere else since then.

I didn't intend to post this on the Ford Board. My bad. It is more a tool question than a Ford question. Besides it's a Hercules engine for a BF Avery.

Thanks for all the replies. I'll check NAPA in the morning, otherwise I like the ATF idea.

Oil without water tends to hold grit rather than wash it away. I never tried to mix ATF with water so I couldn't say how well it works. I do use diesel to wash grit away from cylinder hones. Don't think I will try it in my high speed grinding wheel valve facing machine that creates more heat on the surface though.

I used to work in a ball bearing factory. We did a LOT of high speed grinding of hardened steel bearing components. The coolant used in the grinding process was, if I remember right, a water soluble vegetable fat. There was some other ingrediants added to inhibit corrosion, etc., but the coolant was mostly water. It not only kept the work cool, but also greatly reduced the build-up on the grinding wheel.

That is why I went with windshield washer fluid in my Black and Decker valve grinder. It is as close as I could get without buying something that was labled exclusively for the purpose.
