New holland 495 haybine roller adjustment

I was hoping some one had done this before and can explain to me how to adjust the roll gap. I have read the manual and it tells me is to remove some shims. I think there is more to it than that. Right now I have close to 1/4 roll gap. The machine I picked up has never been adjusted and still has the original shims.

Thank you in advance.

Simple to do. Should be just like all other model smaller haybines. The cranks have nothing to do with roller spacing, they adjust the force that holds the rollers together. The bottom roller is rigidly mounted, the top roller is flexibly mounted. Loosen the tightening cranks. Locate the top roller stops on each end . Loosen the small bolt holding the shims between the stops . Use a large screwdriver and pry the top roller stop upward enough to take out required shims. Tighten bolt . Repeat on other end of roller. Tighten cranks . To get excellent crushing action and faster drying set the roller spacing so that there is only the slimmest slice of daylight between the roller lugs. They should NOT touch.
