Moving into new barn -is 40 x 60 with 13ft height, it has screw in fluorescent light now and it is too dark-should I go with led flood lights or 4ft long lighting ? The walls and ceiling are not finished just osb on walls.

Try LEDs, they put out good lighting and you won't have to change them out as much. If you get the 100 watt equivalent bulb you will be amazed at the difference it makes.

LED a no brainer in my opinion they use sooooooooooooooooo much less energy. Incandescent and Fluorescent are on the way out, LED is in.

I have found the cheapest shop lighting is just using the plain old screw in fixtures (this is also referred to as the "Edison" bulb). When I need additional light, I use a splitter (those guys you screw in to a socket and get two sockets to add bulbs to). I then add two more splitters into the first splitter, resulting in four bulbs for one fixture.

Put in four 100w equivalents and you have a four hundred watt (equivalent) fixture using only 100 watts ( if you use CFL bulbs) and, say, 70 watts using LED bulbs.

The net result is that you can't buy a cheaper fixture than just using a simple porcelain screw in with four bulbs. I've tried to find something cheaper and it just can't compare.

I would stay away from CFLs and Halogen. I have had CFLs go up in a flash and smoke and have had halogens explode and both are on there way out. I have used the LED floods but only outside and do give off a lot of light and they only use 12 watts per fixture. I have used six LED outdoor yard lights in my 40x60 building and they use about 31 watts per fixture and work great in my building.

I second the LED non flood type , buy yourself some and try it out
But only buy the 5000K daylight bulbs they have the most light output,
And I second the screw In Y bulb sockets so you can double up or more
Bulbs if not bright enough no need to wire more sockets switches ect.
My garage is 25 X 30 and have about 14 bulbs in 7 sockets and light
Out put is great for only 140 watts total , I use 9 .5 watt led bulbs 60 watt
Replacement the last batch of bulbs were indoor out door

I had 8' fluorescent lights in my shop. I tried different tubes (cool white, etc.) and never found any I was comfortable with. And it can be a big job getting to the fixture to change a burned out tube in my shop. 14' ceilings and everything in the way will need moved. Menards had LED fixtures on sale so thought I would try some. If they were not very bright, I could put them over the work bench. They are 4' long with a single tube and can be plugged into the end of each other making a longer run without the extra wiring. I put 1 4' next to 1 8' flo. and the LED is much brighter. I left the 8' lights for use when I don't care if it is very bright and use the LED when I want to really see what I am looking for.

When comparing LED lights, look for ones with the highest Lumen rating. You won't be disappointed.

Depends on what you'll be doing. If only storage the points of light from CF or LED is sufficient but if you plan to work there the shadows will drive you crazy. Use fluorescent.

Not really true. We just replaced the 4 ft. fluorescent bulbs in our fluorescent fixtures in basement with the direct replacement LEDs bulbs and they give off more light and less shadows than the fluorescent bulbs.

You will want the 4 foot lights if you plan to do much work in there. The efficiency of T5s is almost the same as LED but the LEDs will soon make T5s obsolete in my opinion. Putting up T8s would be the cheapest but you need to watch for the low temp start ratings if you live in the north. I would use 4100K or higher lamps whatever you buy.

They are 4 foot long and about an inch in diameter. You take the old 40 watt fluorescent bulbs out and put these in and they are 16 watts each. They make them several colors and I put in the one they call daylight.
