Anyone tried one of these?

www.8253DAT Master Lock Stainless Steel Tailgate Lock

Saw on the news thefts are up in my area, thinking of trying one. I like the ability to unlock it when I need to take it off.

Thanks!

I'd think twice about buying any lock made by the Master lock company. I've been watching videos on youtube. This locksmith has been showing how easy it is to open any Master lock. He used a plastic zip tie, a cat food can pull tab, a wooden stick, paper clips, and a lock pick. He has also opened them by striking the side with a small hammer. He says if you value your stuff don't use Master Locks!

The videos got me to wondering so I tried my pad locks. I have six including Masters,National, Castle, and two brass no names made in China. I made a pick from wire Like the guy in the video had and tested them. I can open Both my Master Locks in less then 11 seconds with no trouble. The Castle lock I can open in about 30 seconds. The two brass made in China locks. The large one I can't pick open and the small brass lock I broke, But it came open. I can't get the National hardware lock to open.

I watched a review of tailgate locks. While they all worked to a degree the thing I found interesting was that a regular old stainless steel hose clamp worked well too. Most thieves want to get going FAST. Taking a hose clamp off in a confined space is not a fast thing to do. The reviewer talked about a construction company that was losing tail gates. They just put hose clamps on the lift out side and had not lost one in over a year.

They showed putting the clamp on and tightening it while the tail gate was closed. You needed a socket and ratchet because of the bumper being in the way. When the tail gate was opened the screw head of the clamp is turned wrong to reach with a screw driver.

(quoted from post at 17:08:35 06/26/16) They want the tail gate, not your stuff.
hiefs only want nice tail gates,...Put a couple good dents in it,..they'll leave it alone.lol

I have never understood what they make them so EZ to remove. I have never took mine off probably because I forgot it will come off....

The master combination tailgate lock works really good.I can pick an Abuse lock faster than a 6021 masterlock. Chevy made two different kinds of Vetts, a Corvette and a Chavette. Master lock has the same thing.

Haha yup in 15 years my tailgate hasn't been stolen, and if it is I will just go to Lowes and buy another Douglas fir 2x8!

So, first you believe some slanted "make news" story. Then you overreact trying to lock up your stuff.
First, let me say that locks are to keep your friends out. They will not stop a thief. Making things difficult to steal will go farther than anything to deter theft.

Let me also say this: in my lifetime, I have had exactly TWO things stolen from my car. The first time was in 1969 and the4 thief broke my wing window, twisted up the window frame, and stole my tape player. I have NEVER locked my car since. Second time, somebody was stealing things out of cars in my neighborhood. There were quite a few broken windows. My windows were not broken. They took the removable center console fabric bag. Cost me all of $20 to get another at the junkyard. What does a window cost?????

Dodge put a hole where a bolt could be put.in the block the right side from lifting off, on the early dual-wheeled pick-ups, to protect the wiring to the center marker lights. If there's a way to do that on your tailgate, it would make a quick get-away impossible.

Guy that owns the local Mexican restaurant went down there to visit family.
Stayed a night at a little village on his way.
Got up the next morning and his tailgate was gone.
Went to get gas and there was his tailgate leaning against the wall, had to buy it back for $200!
