Pressed on bearing removal

Have a bearing, lets say its 2.5 inches in diameter, pressed on a one inch shaft. there is not enough clearance behind the bearing to get the jaws of my gear puller on it in order to pull it off. whats a shade tree mechanic to do?

Several solutions.

If you are trying to save the bearing, you'll have to find a way to get behind it. There is a "bearing separator", a 2 piece plate that bolts together under the bearing, then you can get a puller on it.

Or, you can cut the outer race off with a torch or grinder, get it out of the way, then torch the inner race until it glows in one spot, hit it with a hammer, expand it out, it will fall off. Or carefully grind one side of the race away, split it, get it off that way.

You can also break them off by hitting them with a hammer if you can get at them. If you can't access it any of the ways stated so far I have used a punch to punch out the balls and get the outer part off to get to the inner race. Be carefull of flying bearing parts on all my suggestions tho.

For me it's about the value of time, my time is very valuable because I have so little of it at home, and a used bearing has little value to me even if it feels like it's ok. Bearings are such a pain to replace so they mostly just get replaced with new every time I work with them. If you need to do much persuading at all to get them off they are frequently damaged enough that they will go out soon anyway. So for me if they don't come off quick it's out with the torch or some other quick way to get them off.

You need to borrow a bearing separator

If you can use a torch without getting anything else to hot in the immediate area I sometimes cut the bearing down to the race then put some good heat on the race this will swell it up and then most likely it will slide off the shafts

Agreed. Get a bearing seperator. You can easily rent them for about $10 a day or you can buy a cheap one from Amazon for around $70.
