Pulling the rear wheel off the axle?

1010 Blues

Anyone got suggestions on the best way to pull the wheel off the axle on a 1965 1010? Pretty sure it is taperd and has not been off in 30 years, definitely has not been off in 26. Tried to rig up a make shift puller by laying a draw bar across the end of the axle and running a hardened bolt with a nut on it an the draw bar started bending, wow!

I've rigged up a puller device much like you've described and had decent luck with it. Just keep a load on the puller and whack the hub with a big hammer. I've found bigger works better, but also a decent size air hammer works pretty well too. I have an air rivet hammer is what I usually use. Heat may help too, but I can't say that heating one really did me any favors. Be patient, it will come off. May have to use some brute force, but it will come off.

John Deere service manual for 1010 tractors shows using a hydraulic crossbar puller of some capacity.

I'm giving away my age here, but on the old Fords autos (prior to 1949) with tapered keyed axles, I learned to loosen the nut about one turn, then drive it for a day or two and the hub would be loose.

I made a puller for the Massey. Started out with a 17 ton power-pak, didn't work. Moved up to a 20 ton bottle jack, didn't work. Moved up to a 50 ton bottle jack, Almost maxed out the jack when it popped lose.

Considering that I quoted a particular post, it shouldn't be too hard to figure it out.
