I am looking for a min welder. Not looking to spend a lot of money, but want to buy something that is decent and can use for light duty on the farm and arid the shop. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance.

I bought a mig 135 - 120volt with gage for under 300.00 and am very happy with it. I never bought the tank and switched it to flux core which does all I need. Been a coupla years and it looks like that welder has jumped a few bucks in price. Check Eastwood for the lower price. I use mine for thin wall conduit for gates as well as angle iron projects. I welded in a new front skin on my horse trailer last year. Made a exhaust manifold for my one tractor also. Seems to always a need to make or repair something and the flux core works well for me.

In my experience you will want a name brand, miller, hobart, or Lincoln. I've found the Lincolns to be the best of them. Off brand stuff is more hit and miss as far as getting one that works well.

Like you, I prefer Lincoln welders, but have found Miller to be more advanced in their electronics. This is based on much more observation than personal use, but I did get to see a lot of different equipment used at the college welding shop where I worked for a number of years. Lincoln seemed to have the old technology mastered, so I thought their transformer welders to be the best available, but Miller's inverter welders were more innovative, as well as being robust, well thought out, and reliable.

Just my opinion,

Stan

Buy name brand,220 volt and gas shield/flux core. If you never plan welding anything less than 10 guage flux core only machine will save a few bucks but has low resale.

John, I bought a hobart couple months ago at orschlens farm store for about 500.00. It is a 110 volt version. I wanted something I could plug in anywhere. I bought the gas for it.. makes a huge difference in spatter and weld. This unit wont do heavier stock but I have a stick and acytelene already so no issue there.. So far I've been happy with the hobart mig unit..

I bought a Hobart 140 a couple of weeks ago to replace a Clarke that I had nothing but trouble with. It was on sale for $469 at TSC. I love it.

You can buy cheaper flux core only welders, but, as they say, you get what you pay for.

I had gas on my Clarke welder, so I plumbed the Hobart for gas right away and didn't even try the flux core wire that came with it.

I am by no means a welder, but after using a Lincol 225 tombstone for about 15 years I bought a LIncoln 110 MIG. I have had it for about fifteen years and am very happy. It is surprising how thick of material you can melt with that little wire.
