Best Deck Stain/Sealer

Our 30 year old deck is in good condition, but needs staining/sealing. What high quality product do you recommend? I'm not looking for a bargain. We get a lot of weather up here in NE Wisconsin.

Also, deck is 12' x 16'. How much product would I need?

Thank you,
Glenn F.

I'd sure use whatever you used before to make to 30 years. That's unheard of on a deck for life.

The biggest thing I have done right is to keep the surface and spaces FREE of organic material. Such material holds moisture & causes rot. Twice per year I blow out all cracks with 165psi air compressor. Plus sweep regularly.

Opaque (solid) stains seem to last about twice as long as semi-transparent stains do for me.

Though I have no first hand experience with it, the well-known radio home improvement talk show host that I sometimes listen to highly recommends One-Time Wood.

It is very expensive but he says that it is in another class from most deck sealer/preservatives.

Flood or super deck are great products. I stain decks for a living. If you need advice how to post back and I will tell you.

I would use a product like Thompson's water seal.
I don't do much deck work but have seen a lot of decks that they used a stain type product and it flakes off after a few years. Thompson's is clear and you can apply it with a pump type garden sprayer. Easy.
Yes, 30 years is a very good life on a wood deck.

I just googled Flood deck stain. There products are called "Penetrating" stains. That is what I want in a deck preservative. I was using Thompsons, but noticed after a few years that it wasn't penetrating. I tried boiled linseed on a trailer, but then noticed that it didn't penetrate, so I tried used motor oil, which sucked right in. Looks like Flood could be worth trying.

Cabot which is sold at lowes is the best I have ever applied. Now it is not cheap. We has a 970 sq/ft deck and 346x6 post around the porches. We mask the house off in painters plastic, sprayed it on thick and rolled it in with a roller. Lasted the longest of anything I have ever used. I did get the oil based.

I would recommend Cabot as well. Make sure you go with their semi transparent though. The solid stain is basically like paint. Also I'd steer clear of any "Deckover" product. I am not a believer in Thompson's water seal either. I can't tell you how many customers complained about that stuff.

We used the semi transparent Cabot

I will agree do not use the deck over or restore junk. It won't stick and is easily scuffed off at the corners of stairs and edges of boards. It looks as if someone dumped a gallon of sand in a gallon of paint and stirred it up.

Glenn,

I have used the other common products over the decades, but a somewhat unknown product was recommended to me by a professional painter friend. It is made in Wisconsin by a small paint company, and does the best job I've seen in this climate of many extremes. It is X-100 by ABR. They are now making separate products for vertical wall and fence surfaces as compared to horizontal deck surfaces. I have just redone my cedar deck 14 ft by 30 ft, taking about 2 gallons. I had sanded the surface with a belt sander, so it was very porous. Check out this link for another evaluation: http://www.oneprojectcloser.com/x-100-deck-stain-sealer-review/
