Electroplating

I have a knife from 1854 which I found out from a search of the three names on it and that the firm went out of business in 1854 but to me it looked electroplated. I searched the history of electroplating and sure enough the British were electroplating in 1840, I think my knife is nickel plate on a piece of steel. You tend to think of electricity use as starting with the light bulb but not so . In the Jules Verne book 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea the sub had electricity . The book was 1850s as I recall.

Ever hear of the mysterious batteries that have been found in ancient ruins, thinking Egyptian? They also found a sunken barge from around 100 AD(?), loaded with these crude batteries.

No one knows for sure what they were used for, but I would suspect plating.

Hi Steve! That is very interesting about the ancient "battery" devices. Can you tell me where you saw it? I would like to research it and expand my knowledge some. It seems like there could be a big "wow" factor to this information that would be fun to know!

That's pretty neat. I never gave much thought to useful electricity back that far. I imagine that since they had the Telegraph about then, it makes sense that they used it for other things. Was it Lyndon Jars that Ben Franklin experimented with? Kind of a crude battery if I remember right.

w1ebb,

Just search "ancient batteries".

Some very interesting findings! Some of it though is a bit of a stretch to believe, but it's on the internet, so...

The drawings of what appears to be "light bulbs and battery packs" in the pyramids is interesting. But they have never found anything that would have been left behind. It is an unsolved mystery how they were able to create enough light to make the elaborate wall paintings, but there is no evidence of soot from candles or oil lamps!

Okay, thanks Steve, I'm sure it will be interesting and educational reading, since one of my other hobbies is amateur radio and building my own antennas.

Thanks again,

Scott

Before Tesla, nobody knew jack about AC current and generation; which for plating is OK, since you only use DC for plating. Caswell Plating has some DIY plating kits, they work.
