Spanner Wrench Question

I need to loosen the nut that applies pressure for slip clutch on a New Idea spreader drive shaft. I'm thinking I need to use a spanner hook wrench to grab the notches around the outside of the nut. Am I correct in thinking that the "heel" of an adjustable hook wrench will fit in one of the notches and the "hook" will grab in another notch, about 1/3 of the way around the nut?

Can not see the picture well enough to see the nut. Is it a nut that has a cotter pin hole in the shaft to lock it in place?? If it does then you need to use a common wrench and tighten it up to where you need it to be and put in a new cotter pin

Sure looks like you could grab it with a regular wrench, like 6 or 12 point or even a big adjustable

Don't have a spanner wrench that size. I would grab my 3 ft pipe wrench and smack wrench with a 12# sledge if it didn't want to come loose.

Those adjustable spanners cover a different size range each. Just measure the OD of that thing and get the correct range wrench. Usually 2 models will work for one size, so if you can - oversize. Where the heel lands is irrelevant, but for the right size tool it should be approximately halfway around from where the hook is.

Thanks guys for the answers. I'll try a big pipe wrench first before trying a spanner wrench.

That's what I used to use,or a dull chisel. I've got a 4 foot pipe wrench now that I'd reach for first.

Very good! So many people just want to beat the "blank" out of it. The right tool always works better.
