Want to build a small brush hog

Want to build a small brush hog that I can pull behind a garden tractor to cut places a larger tractor can't get to. Plan to remove the mower deck from garden tractor for more clearance. Want to power the brush hog with it's own engine.

I would like to see pics of your brush hog. I would like to put wheels on it that I can adjust the height my moving a lever. Please show me what you have build. I want to use a single blade mower deck as big as possible, belt driven. Thinking I may have to come up with some way to slow down the blade speed too. Hoping you made this from used, recycled parts. thanks geo.

Shoot look at pictures of say the D.R. brand they make a good many but also like to let you know you pay for there name. Many companies out there that make a pull behind that you could use for ideas to build your own but not sure you might find one cheaper then what you could build your self

Well the ones made by many of the companies are tried and true so you know they work and seem to work well so some times hard to improve a mouse trap

You might find a good one for sale.

A friend of a friend recently bought a new one, Northern Tool I think, wanted to do just what you are needing.

He pulled it behind a 4-wheeler, tried it once and was not pleased! Ended up selling it for half what he paid. I don't know what kind of problem he was having.

Just look up homemade pull behind mowers, lots of ideas there....

Using a mower deck will give you nothing more than a mower. The deck, blades, spindles and most everything else will not be strong enough to hold up for anything more than mowing grass. If you just want to mow grass then that will work great, but for cutting brush you will quickly find that all you have is a bent up piece of junk.

I would be concerned about what type of blade to use. Grass blade will bend and if a piece of it should break off.....well I hope you or someone else doesn't catch it

I've been reading a lot of posts by you lately with a lot of questions/ideas that seem to be slightly out of whack.

I'm beginning to think you might be in the early stages of dementia. For your sake, I hope not.

I need it to mow brush around flowers in
gravel pit. Thanks for your concern about my
health.

Just take that JD275 ? IIRC and go at it. It will chew up anything you can drive over. And once done then you can just keep it cleaned up. And if you can't drive over it I know your little backhoe can take care of it !
I ran an LX172 all over my woods and now my F725. I have chopped off some rough stuff for a lawn mower ! I still do the most damage to it at the edge of a gravel drive when it digs in tears up my blades edges.

Mike my problem is rough tarian. Rocks. I need to remove mower from a garden tractor for clearance
Then use a pull behind or attach brush hog like on 3 pt arms would be better.

The power line right of way clearing crew just went thru by my place, they build their own brush hog. They use a 1" plate for the stump jumper. They also make their own blades. Appears to run slower than a regular brush hog. It doesn't seem to slow down much when going thru heavy stuff, and it is also a lot quieter than a regular brush hog. Best I could tell the stump jumper was kind of football shaped with a short stubby blade on each end. Hope you can use some of their ideas to make one on a smaller scale.

I'd be smoothing up the area with the teramite. How wide is it I'm guessing 5 foot ? Put a smooth plate on the backhoe bucket and reach back in the tight spots.

Why not hydraulic driven to mount on the teramite either on the backhoe or out front on the loader

George, Google Bush Hog GT42. I think that is what you might be looking for. You can probably find one way cheaper that you can build one. I have a GT42, it has a Honda engine with a centrifugal clutch and a single 42 inch blade.

Mike, I've tried using a mower mounted horizontally of the front loader. There are some places it doen't work the way I wanted, especially after flowers have been planted. I did remove some brush so I could get behind to prune trees back away form flowers.

Past winter we cut a lot of honey suckle back. Removed some and left some roots. What we left is now 3 ft tall. A small brush hog will do the job. Even a lawn mower would work, but the ground is too uneven.

I found most of the parts I need to make what I want. Now I need a rainy day to work on it. Then some time fine tune so it works the way I want.

Gary and markct you both have very good suggestions. Did I mention I'm cheap? I think I found enough parts to build one. Cost me my time and a V-belt. Thanks for your input.

The GT42 sounds like something I'm going to build, without breaking the bank. I've been retired for 12 years. On a fixed income. Besides I have more fun making something redneck.

Using the hydraulics on the backhoe is another good idea. Again cost a pant load. Not to mention a real BPIA connecting it up to terramite for a few hours work every month.

I would be very happy if someone wants me to test out their GT42 and write a review on it. It may take a lot times using it before I decide if I like.

On the subject of mowers here is one I had built to go on my Gradall excavator, it would mulch up trees up to about 4 inch, start at the top and follow it down and have nothing but wood chips and noise that could be heard for miles! Sold it last fall to a guy who put it on a 12,000lbs excavator and has happily munched up a lot of brush. I want to build a small mower to go on my mini excavator using about a 15 inch disk and disk mower knives to cut briars and light brush

I've seen a few working in the neighborhood that eats the entire tree from the top down. I have a cheap gene, like to make it myself. thanks though. geo.

I have several Simplicity mower decks and have been pondering for a couple years building a pull behind mower to hook behind my forecart. The only reason would be to give more for one of my mini horse teams to do. It would also be fun to watch the rubber neckers as they drive by.

One new foal was out close to the road in the pasture and when I was getting ready to shut them up traffic was going by at about 20 mph. Semi's and cars. The word must have gotten out because they were slowing down before they could see the baby horse. Probly second pass for some.

I have a lot of pine trees that have limbs at ground level.
I took a 48" Allis Chalmers/ Simplicity mower deck, put an electric motor on it. I have a 4000 watt 120/240 belt driven generator on my A.C. 917 garden tractor. I side mounted the mower deck to my 917. It works nice.

Lots of folks take a push mower, remove the handle, and weld/ bolt brackets to it,,, and your done. quick adjust wheel height really helps.
