Boy tells me he is going to get a new engine. Design flaw. Class action forces Toyota to fix problems. His car has 135k and uses a qt every 1200. He says believe it when it happens.

Anyone heard anything?

Guy down the road had his fixed three weeks ago, they are only replacing the Pistons not engines according to him.

I think that's the one where they didn't install the wrist pin retainers.

Toyota defines acceptable oil usage as a quart per thousand miles. Or at least they did 6-7 years ago.

Boy did mention defective pistons. Replacing pistons along won't do much. Let you know what Toyota does.

Well, new pistons MIGHT fix the problem. I believe the problem is the oil-return holes behind the piston ring. I don't think there was enough of them. Talk to your boy again and ask him for details on this warranty. If I'm correct (and I may not be), they will replace the pistons and rings, but nothing else. So if they find other problems there, he is stuck for footing the bill. Water pump bad? Your boy pays for it. Scored cylinders? Toyota won't touch it. Maybe I'm just dreaming here, but I heard about this warranty some time ago, but I just can't remember if it's for the Camry or some other car.

googled toyota's problem.

first gas peddles sticking.
second Air bags
Now oil consumption issue, class action.

toyota will have to fix the problem. Betting they will stop the oil consumption. Let you know what they do.
class action

Our FJ Cruiser manual allows a quart every 800 miles. It does not use a drop in 5K changes, but that is what is allowed.

I use Mobil 1 in our Camry; drive it 10,000 miles between changes and don't have to add any oil between changes (It's down about a pint at change time). The recall is open to owners who do experience excessive oil consumption. Our Tundra V-8 does use almost a quart of oil when I change O&F at 5,000 miles, but that is acceptable.

Toyota replaced the frame in my 2004 Tundra due to rust. The truck was 9 yrs. old with 140 k at the time, all break lines from front to back were part of the recall replacement at no cost to me. I did ask them to change the Shocks and the timing belt while apart, they only charged the price of the shocks with no labor and a slight charge for the timing belt and labor. The job took less than 4 days I was happy with everything. Last yr it was the Air bags the work took 1.5 hrs. and no charge.

Toyota had an issue where the oil return was too close to the exhaust ports and caused sludge to form there from over heated oil.

Check models for Toyota's engines and years being fixed. Boy's is using a quart every 1200 and he uses full synthetic. Piston problem the articles says. Just a few years.

We have had Camrys and Tacomas, no significant oil consumption issues. All were 4 cylinders.

A lot may depend on the dealer, some are more customer oriented and will bend over backward. Tacoma has had problems with noisy leaf springs for years (wife had a 2006 and now a 2015 with same issue). They lubed the rear springs several times on the 06, and now dealer replaced the entire leaf spring assy on both sides on the 15 solving the issue for a while, but noticed it is back again. Dealer swears they will repair for as long as we own. Powertrain is lifetime for as long as we own with $100 deductible. Saw a older Tundra have an entire frame replaced with well over 200K on it a few years back, at no charge due to recall. Never seen this from any other manufacturer.
