speaking of dogs

The post below reminded me of a Shepard/collie mix pup I picked up while I was dog catcher. He was about the smartest judge of people I ever knew. He never threatened anybody, but he was always on guard over the family anytime someone he didn't know showed up. He'd give any stranger "the look", as to say, I don't know you, Bub. You behave yourself and we'll be fine. If you don't, you are gonna have ME to deal with! Never growled at anyone, just gave em that look. If he didn't trust someone his body language made it clear to the family, and you usually found out later that the guy was a scumbag.

Had a load of firewood on my truck and the chain saw perched on top. Stowed the saw away safely before sunfall, but about 11 pm. I heard the dog growl, and the truck door close. I flew out the door with a revolver in hand, but the dog already had the guy on the run. Dog came back with a chunk of the dudes sock in his mouth and a rather smug look. That's the only time that dog ever bit anybody in the 8 years we had him.

I've known dogs that were able to judge others intentions. Watching Ceaser Malon (sp?) Saturday, he said dogs can smell adrenaline, keys them off to someone that is nervous or scared.

Years ago I went to visit a coworker. He knew I was coming but forgot to put the dog away. I walked up on the porch and knocked on the door. The dog, which I had never met, calmly walked over to be petted, which I did. His wife came to the door, panicked, pulled me in and slammed the door! She proceed to explain that she had no explanation for why the dog didn't attack, or even bark! Said no one had ever even gotten close without that dog going after them!

They later had to have the dog put down because of his aggressive behavior. He attacked a man that got too close to one of the kids, chewed him up even when they were trying to get him off!

Sad for the dog, but the man he bit, I didn't trust him either!

Kind of the opposite of a husky we have. Someone could come in the yard and sneak up on you and chop you up with a machete and the dog would just ignore them unless they came toward him. Then she would run from them.

Yeah, we have a pug in the house. Thing will bark up a storm, but the only way she would hurt anyone would be to lick them to death. She is the most people friendly dog I have ever seen. If someone broke into my place, she would show them where all the good stuff was. Lol! (that is IF they got by the heeler outside) He doesn't have to bite em. His challenge bark is more like a Viking battle roar. Give em a heart attack right on the spot.

lol....had a pug for a lot of years..agree, most people friendly dog I've ever seen. But, a full warrior in his own mind. I scooped him up and carried him in numerous times when he would start a stiff-legged battle charge at a black bear he thought was too close to me.

also had a big Rott..very nice dog. Wouldn't bark or growl..he would just stand up and glance at me for my ok when someone pulled in ..then do the Rott ignore everybody thing. But visitors never took their eyes off him...some would even whisper instead of talking out loud...funny stuff

My dog will go sit in front of the door. Doesn't bark and if the door opens. It had better be someone he knows opening it.If not things can get nasty.

I went looking for an escaped bull calf one day. I was half way up the porch steps of one house down the road and out from under the porch came a surprised looking German Shepard that promptly grabbed hold of my let with almost no warning.

I had climbed half way up the porch before they got to the door and opened it. They said, "What are you doing up there ?!?" And I pointed at the dog. After they got him inside I was able to inquire about the calf.

No real damage beyond torn pants and some blood but could have turned out badly if it had happened to a Girl Scout trying to sell some cookies or something. Could have been an easy lawsuit but I'm not that type. In the Killeen/Temple area in the last couple of years they've had two instance where a neighborhood dog killed a child.

It never ceases to amaze me how some people actually are proud of how mean and aggressive their dogs are.

When I was doing insurance inspections, any time I encountered a dog on the premises I had to take a photo of it, if possible, and comment in my report whether the dog's temperament was friendly, protective, or aggressive.

"Friendly" is self explanatory. "Protective" means the dog with bark or make its presence known, but will not attack. "Aggressive" means the dog will attack without provocation. People didn't realize which box I checked, along with my notes, would have a large impact on their homeowner's insurance premiums.
