The Windows 10 Saga

I've seen a few posts concerning Windows 10 more or less hijacking computers. Since I experienced the same problem I want to share how to fix it. By no way is this an endorsement or recommendation for the product Im about to mention, its just what I found to be the easiest solution and its free. We all like free things don't we. Those who have operating Windows operating systems other than Windows 10 have probably been seeing pop ups offering Windows 10 free. This offering comes via your normal Windows update which most people have set in their settings as "automatic". I have not chosen Windows 10. Then last week by computer booted up and told me that Windows 10 was ready to down load. Since I didn't want it I searched for a button to decline. After some manipulation I was able to close that Window. Then it happened again so I pushed the download and it began going to the User Agreement which I declined and the download stopped. Doing some research I discovered that if your are computer literate you can go into the Windows Update and remove and hid the particular update that has Windows 10. As you can probably guess, not being that computer literate I followed the directions and was able to remove one update, but it didn't help. There was another one that you were suppose to hide, but I couldn't find it. So, I opted to do a web search and found a free download that is safe and recommended by the "computer guys". It did the trick, No more problem on two of my computers. If you are computer literate you can do a web search and discover how to get rid of the Windows 10 upgrade offer. If not take a look at GWX Control Panel. It is very easy to use and solves the Windows 10 problem. You'll find it on the web for free and is a just a few seconds to download and a few minutes use and your done.

I suppose I could rant about Microsoft's elitist attitude in their trying to force Windows 10 on the consumer, but won't. I hope this solution works for you.

They were trying to force 10 on me for months.... and finally gave me a popup telling me it would be done in x hours. I found a way to shut it down from there... but forget what it was. Just follow the fine print......

I have Windows 10 all all my computers. No problems, matter of fact, the machines run so much better than 7 or 8. Why are you hesitant about installing 10?

I have never owned any Apple product and feel good about that.

Too bad that's Forbes; they won't let me in until I kill my adblocker. Which I won't.

I learned 17 years ago, never, ever, upgrade. Anything. It was working OK before the 'upgrade', now it's nothing but problems. When did MS put the return to previous time button on their OS? That was a direct result of people downloading an upgrade and the comp don't work, and need to go back in time before they did the download; when it worked.

I got 10 on a netbook, I have an 'hotspot' for my Tmobile ISP deal. Left the hotspot on one night, found out the 10 OS was waking up the computer and down loading 'updates' from MS. Burned thru 4 or my 5 gigs of data in one night downloading their crap. Can't pull the battery in the netbook, so it's out in the garage, out of range of the hotspot until the battery died.

Turns out you can't turn off the download crap from MS; not an option. Even when I'm using the netbook, ISP slows to a crawl because 10 is downloading more crap. And no notification that I can see or find that is what it's doing. Just get a little popup that the download is done.

Al Qaeda is encouraging one of the guys to kill Gates; hope they do. He deserves it.

Hi oldfarmtractor; I in fact upgraded my laptop to Windows 10 a while back and after using it a while I saw no real benefit. I read the reviews online and depending on what you use you computer for it may be of benefit, but they also said for just run of the mill use it only made things a little faster. I like Windows 7 and I'm use to it so a little more speed isn't a big deal. I'm not a techie so for my use I decided not to install it on my two other computers. The rub for me is the way in which Microsoft is being pushy in getting people to upgrade. It's the door to door salesman or car salesman that won't take no for an answer. Now for me, no means no, if I have refused the offer umpteen times they ought to get the message. If I want it in the future, I'll get it. If you want me to respect you, then respect me. Their methods to me smack of elitism where the elitist thinks they know what is best for you. It doesn't matter if you are agreeable or not, you'd better like what they shove at you. If you don't you're a terrorist. It's like the stuff that's coming out of Washington, they don't have a clue about me, my family, or our needs and if the truth be known, they don't really care, they are in it for the power and wealth they can gain. Ok, I'll throw in my apology, I'm sorry for the rant. Did I answer your question?

Hi Joe; that's exactly what I'm talking about. So Microsoft is "HELPING"! Yeah, right. The reporter did a much better job and gave the same solution. Thanks!

So I guess I will just not use my computer until July 30 and I won't have to worry about it!
Oh, wait. My computer operating system is Ubuntu, something I've used for over 10 years without as much of a hiccup. Never mind.....
One more thing. My daughter just graduated college with a computer science degree. She had quite a few companies trying to hire her and she settled on a good company with a great salary. She won't use anything that has a Windoze OS.

I just wonder what info 10 is collecting for them that they are pushing the upgrade for free. Or given Bill Gates' stance when Apple wouldn't create a back door into the i-phone for the feds, who might it be allowing access to your machine?
When it was released, I saw a couple articles about security setting changes to make to keep it from broadcasting info you punch into your computer.

El Hombre, you can change the wifi connection to "metered" to stop it using too much of your data plan. Google it to find out how. On my system, I left click on the icon for the wifi on the lower right bar, then right click on the wifi connection in use. One of the options is "Set to Metered Connection". Click on it. It will tell Windows to stop doing background data operations on the connection.

I just did it on my connection. I am running off of my phone this morning because my regular internet connection is down.
