Irrigation control valve leaking...

Have an irrigation control valve leaking that fills the box around the valve with water and overflows when the controller turns on the system. Presumed cause is dirty or worn diaphragm. Compared valves online; it appears to be an Irritrol valve.

I'll wait for a cool morning to open the valve and see if I can find the trouble. Is anyone familiar with that valve?

I am not familiar with irritrol, but I do have lots of experience with Toro. Most valves are basicly the same. You more than likely have some trash and just need to disassemble and clean. You might just need to tighten the head assembly. After a couple years the 6 screws in Toro valves need tightening. There is also a 'jar-top' version that simply screws together. Valves are cheap so keep some extras on hand, if you can remember where you put them. Nathan

Dick2,I have found several leaking diaphragm valves because the diaphragm was either cracked or worn badly where it seals off.A new diaphragm will fix it up.I have even made them out of some like materials,eg Truck air brake diaphragm,or even a old rubber tire liner,if one could not be found readily for replacement.

Get your shovel out, dig around the valve box, and pull it out. Remove all the soil around the valve and 3 inches underneath it. Look for drips. If it's a jar-top valve, try tightening the retaining ring. If the top of the valve is held on with screws or bolts, try snugging them a bit. I do this for a living (several cases of valves per year) and that's as far as I'd go. Next step, replace the valve. As was stated before, they're cheap. You could spend half a day trying to fix and flush the old one with no success. You didn't mention if this system was poly (which makes swapping that valve a breeze) or PVC. There's a couple of other options with the PVC pipe, but I'm not gonna type all that unless you ask!
