I have my grandfather's old grinding stone and looking for a pattern to build a wooden peddle frame with drip capabilities to put it in. Does anyone know where I can find instructions for building one? The stone is approx. 18 - 20 inches across (the best I can remember...it's been sitting in the shop for a while) with a square hole in the middle.

I would check that it is round before you go to the trouble of making the frame. I had one that I got at an auction but it had about a 2" deep dip on one side so it was not really usable and I didn't know how to dress it round again, though I suppose there must be a way to do that.

They get that dip from setting out in the rain for a long time.
I removed most of one from mine by using an angle grinder.

Most of them are made with a soft sandstone. They sometimes have half of an old tire around the bottom to hold water while you are sharpening something. Then the water gets left in the tire and soaks the stone which makes it soft and causes the deep dip in the stone. A can with a hole in it hung above the stone and dripping water on it eliminates that problem. An old feller told me once that you could true it up again by using a gas pipe on it whatever that is. You could probably dress it up by using a wheel dresser meant for newer grindstones.

Yes, you can dress them with any heavy steel object. I used and old horseshoe file. Took about 1/2 and hour and my leg was getting pretty sore, but it works.

As far as the frame, it's a pretty common design. You can find plans in many old farm books and probably on the net someplace.
