Frigidaire Air Conditioner

Steve,

I insulate my rentals well, so most of the time I can get buy using 5-6000 btu A/c. It's hard to say if today's A/c are as good as the ones made 5 years ago.

So, I don't have an answer for you. If I were buying new ones, I would want digital controls, not the old knob switches which tenants usually damage. That usually means spending more and digital controls are mostly on the 6000 units.

So who digital? Answer, they have a 3 minute built in delay on start for the compressor. If you have a power blip during a storm, compressor gets a 3 minute rest before it starts.

My advice is go digital controls.

I also cover the outside of my A/c with aluminum window screen to keep the cotton wood and dust from choking the condenser coil. I also drill holes to let water drain. Today's A/c are made of very thin metal. In about 5 years the metal frame work will rusted out. My A/c are removed in the fall and before I put them back in, I take them apart clean and use a bleach to kill bacteria that grows inside them. They get gross looking.

Those little $99.00 a/c units sold under various trademarks seem to hold up fine, at least for a few years. Most common problem is the fan motors. Seems like the bearings go bad just after warranty. Most times it is not economical to replace the fan motors due to the labor involved to strip down the unit to get to the motor.

You are right $99 units are throw away units. Most of the small fans have no place to be oiled, no way to take apart, glued together.

Most of the time, the outer bushing in motor nearest the condenser fan is the one that locks up. If you could take the motor apart, just clean out the dirt, oil and good to go. A simple $.05 fiber washer on the shaft would act like a slinger and keep the dirt out of the bushing. The manufacture most likely wants to save a nickle and sell you a new unit. If I'm able to get motor apart, clean up the bushing, polish the shaft, oil it, I will install the nickle fiber washer.

It wouldn't be worth it if I had to pay someone to do this work. BTW, I worked my way through college as a heating and air mechanic at Bethlehem Steel, Burns Harbor, In. today we call them HVAC.

I built my house 37 years ago, one nail at a time. I based it on "zone comfort" and that was back when the book "How to Survive the Coming Hard Times" was published, which I read and heeded....except for the part ".....and have $10,000 in silver coins handy......", by Howard Ruff.

The cooling part of that was window/wall installation room ACs. Maybe it's due to the evolution of technology, and maybe it's due to "diversity in manufacturing......sources". Whatever you choose to call it, today's ACs are an outstanding product for the money, just no 2 ways about it.

To answer your question, I have been buying ACs from HD and Lowes since they started selling them. HD sells LG and Lowes sells Frigidaire. I have 7 currently of the mix in operation and have had ZERO problems with any of them. Additionally, the price is unbelieveable for what you get and being big box stores your satisfaction is guaranteed. So it just depends on how I feel at the time as to which I buy.
