Hello,

You had or seen this refrigerator while you were A youngster. Any body know how old?

I'm not old, I'm chronologically accomplished.

Actually, Thomas Jefferson once said a man is known for his actions, not his age, and ever since he told me that I quit worrying about it.

I recall one in our kitchen from late 40s to late 50s. It predated wwII because my uncle bought it then gave it to mom when he joined up shortly after Pearl Harbor. Never quit cooling but mom tired of holding the door on with a dineing chair after hinges wore out. It was sure imbarassing when a guest grabbed the chair and the door fell off.

If it is like the one I use to have to keep bait in pull the temp control knob off and under it there is a screw. You can turn it into a freezer buy turning that screw

Hello Ivan in Mich,

Now I will have to to take a peek under that cold control knob,

I'm 45 and we had two like that growing up. One was a 1949 great grandma bought new. Dad still has it and it works.

That looks like the ice box we had when I was 4 or 5. Then folks got a International refrigerator around 1948.

Forgot to ask, where are the ice trays? We used the aluminum ones with the lift up handle to separate them, then the plastic ones that you twist to pop them out.

Youngster? That looks like the one in my garage cooling beer right now. General Electric with a 4" thick door and sides.

Hello Russ from MN,

Read the label. 1/8 H.P. 120 volts 2.2 to 4 Amps at full load. Does that sound like a lot of power usage?

Hello dhermesc,

I got just one home brewed beer in there @ 35*. Yes it has a thick door. After the fourth layer of duct tape as a seal, it stopped the condensation around the spill box,

I had one, of those with a keg in it for many years. Had one similar to it also that was a Servel and ran on natural gas.

If it has the handle like a slot machine its 50s. Old boys down the road have one their dad bought in 48.

Hello jacksun65,

Yep, its my one arm bandit! It is 35* in there today. Any colder then that, the milk freezes. I bought a gallon of milk with April 4 as last day of sale, drank it My 5 still good, believe it or not!

My Mother had a FridigidAir that looked a lot like that. She bought a stove and the fridge before she was married (1951) and it was in our home until the early 70s
There were 6 of us kids that ate out of that, I don't know how we fit enough in.
I do remember having to get the door handle welded a time or to...probably due to overuse???

My folks had a 'Servel' from before I came along (1948) and had it until the 70's. Dad converted it from Butane (Oklahoma) to Natural Gas around 1952. We had it until the 1970's. It had an ''exhaust pipe' at the top rear and my Mom kept it at 32 degrees in the refrigerator part. I remember we were thought to be 'fancy' in the Oklahoma and Missouri areas where we lived.

My folks had one in the 50s, could have been made in the 40 when they were married and set up an apartment. My father was in the war when they were married, when he was discharged they lived in an apartment for 5-6 years while he worked and built a house. I remember the refrigerator in the mid 50. being in that house. Was born in 49, same year as my Allis Chalmers WD.
