hardware cloth

I want to straighten a roll of 1/4" hardware cloth that is very stiff. I need to fasten it around a shed bottom.

You need a couple of good helpers. Get someone to stand on one end as you unroll it, and walk on it as you go. It can be frustrating.

Roll it backwards! Recently I was helping the BIL in NY and we went into a hardware store looking for hardware cloth and they didn't know what we were talking about! finally got some at Home Depot.

If you walk on it, be sure you are on a true flat surface or you will bend footprints into it. Rolling it backward sounds good but be careful trying to do that alone. Wire has a bad way of flipping up at the face with all those sharp cut edges.

Ask for Rat Wire, that's what my dad called it.

It's a bit of trouble, but C-clamp each end of the wire between 2 2x4s (two on each end) at least as long as the width of the wire. Secure one end of the wire/2x4s to something solid--tree, post, tractor. Pull the wire to its full length, then use the C-clamps on the other end as handles. Give the wire three or four good jerks. May not be flat as a sheet of paper, but it'll be a lot straighter than it was.
