Help Identify This Tool

Bought a used Craftsman tool box last week.

There were at least 25 of these tools of various sizes included.

There are no markings for either the manufacturer or the size on any of them.

All of them are the same length with a point on the end.

What is the name of this tool?

What is this purpose of this tool?

It goes in a holder with a lot of other diameter ones. But you said you have 25 of them . Get a piece of oak and drill out holes to place them in. Quite handy for lay-out of a part from an existing part. Locate one hole with punch drill and bolt part to work piece , now transfer the rest of the holes and drill through.

Isn't there also another use for them or maybe it's another tool all together for driving out or in roll pins. Point keeps it centered.

Transfer punches. You have holes drilled in one piece of metal and you want to make a second piece with holes in the same place just lay the first piece over the second piece and get the proper size punch, drop it in the hole and tap with a hammer, instant center for drilling.

Like other said, they are transfer punches. Their purpose is for MARKING hole locations! They are not center punches! If treated with care they will last, but only tap them just enough to mark the location. Then come back with a center punch to make a drill starter hole.

Hello James Howell,

If the center pin gets bigger as the body of the punch gets bigger they are rolled spring lock pin punches,

Guido.

They are also used to spread copper rivets like you find in brake linings in the two cylinder JD tractors.

Could have used one of these a couple of weeks ago to remove a spring pin on a JD 350 sickle mower.

Not what they were made for, but f you have a broken off bolt in a recessed hole (axle flange bolt) choosing the one that fits snugly in the hole and giving it a tap with a hammer will give you a perfectly centered starting point for drilling.
