cherry picker/engine hoist will not stay up

This contraption leaks down very slowly. It is an internal leak. Where is it most likely to be leaking? I would think that the simplest repair would be the valve in the bottom. If I remove it, will all the oil drain out?
Thank you

Slowly leaking down is usually the ram seal, or it could be the check valve ball/seat, the release valve, or the pressure relief valve. Most likely though it's the ram seal. If you take it apart, as in remove the retainer nut, and pull the ram out, you should be able to see if the seal is bad.

The seal can be bought from a seal supply. You must specify you want a "polyethylene" seal, as in the seal material is polyethylene. Tell them it is for a jack, not a hydraulic cylinder, they will know what you want. Also need to take careful measurements, it's probably metric.

The other option is to replace the entire cylinder, if you can find one. May be cheaper to buy a complete hoist.

I got this at an auction. I had worked for him for 6 months. He liked to replace things to make them better. Like a two stage pump instead of the single that came with the truck. This does not have the original cylinder. But I do have a smaller one here somewhere.

I will pull the top of it apart and see what the condition is.

Stve gave you good advice. MANY times it's is just a seal.

Don't be surprised to open up a cheap jack or jack type cylinder and find orings vs a lip/cup seal either. Seen it. I've repaired many a jack using a universal oring kit.

Hoist cylinders are single acting and do not need a seal on the end of the ram, the only seal the cylinder needs is an external seal where the rod goes through the end plate.

I suspect you have an internal leak at the valve or the relief valve.

I am lucky, have my dads picker with a long screw and wheel, would not want a hydraulic one.

herry picker, huh? If your cherry trees are that short, just us a step stool!
Oh, you are talking about a different tool? A roll around engine hoist, maybe? Learn name of tool.
