Washing vinyl siding

Hello,

Its that time of the year. What do you guys and gals use? I use a brush and concentrated laundry detergent
soap with a little bleach. Works for me!

GUIDO.

Bleach in a pump sprayer then power wash. It's about a every 5 year project in the heat of the summer for me.

60/40 bleach to water in a garden sprayer. By the time you get to one end of a side, the other end is clean. Rinse with a garden hose and nozzle. I mainly do the north side, because of a little bit of black mold.

I spray an aggressive cleaner first with a pump sprayer. Bleach is fine to break algae down some but it has no more penetrating ability than the water. Dish soap will penetrate but is too mild to break the algae down quickly. You will get a better job done with a general purpose cleaner from the dollar store.

Menards gives away deck wash, it's free after rebate. Very concerned bleach and soap. I rigged up a way to spray the deck wash on siding. Bleach doesn't go through pump. I let bleach dry. May need to apply bleach two or three times before mold disappears. Many times easier than brush. I bleach all my rentals in fall when it's cooler. It's an annual event. Of I miss a year I have to work harder to get it clean.

Some places, I just apply bleach and not even pressure wash.

I pull pressure washer behind mower. George

I have white vinyl siding. The north facing sides always accumulate mildew. Bleach, nylon brush on a 25' extension pole for the gable ends, then power wash. I also use bleach on my asphalt shingles too, does not hurt them. I see a lot of folks just letting their roofs turn black.

Hello Married2allis,

My garage gets straight bleach on the shingles. Those dark streaks keep coming back, so repeat as needed,

GUIDO.

My neighbor told me once about a zinc metal strip that can be attached up near the peak on the shingles across the length of the roof. The rain supposedly washes the zinc down onto the shingles preventing any mildew/algae.

Try Wet it and Forget It, it is available at wally world and hardware stores. I spray it on with a garden sprayer and after about 2 or 3 weeks the siding looks a lot better. Heavy mold or algae may require 2 applications. It will harm vegetation so i usually wet the foliage and rinse it afterwords. Bottle states it can be used on shingles also.

Zinc coated metal or copper work. You can see the proof downslope from galvanized flashings on any roof. The zinc strips sold specifically for that purpose are ridiculously overpriced since any galvanized flashing will do the same job. The problem is fastening the metal to the ridge. Nobody I've talked to, including roofers with decades of experience, has described a good way to accomplish the installation so that the metal stays in place and the fasteners don't compromise the roofing. Metal strips are affected by the wind, which is bad enough, but the real problem is the expansion and contraction. Eventually, they work fasteners loose, leading to problems.

If you come up with a good way to deal with this problem, please post it. I've wanted to put zinc or copper on my roof ridges for years, but I've only been discouraged by the information I've gotten from asking about doing it.

I've never tried it either. Sounds like they definitely would blow off in the wind if not fastened down right. Maybe the face-down side of the metal strip could be roughed up with 40-grit, then slide part of it up underneath the top row of shingles, then cement the roughed part down with roofing cement. My roof is 12/12 pitch. I hate getting up there.

Stan, I have a rental that is proof to what you say. Below each roof vent shingles are like new.

You can buy a 2 inch galvanized metal strip you put on the top row of shingles at Menards. Sure there are other places sell them too. geo

I use a mr. clean sponge and that cleans any stains or algae or mildew off the siding and window frames.
