How do you test 18 volt batteries and the charger. It is a DeWatt. Batteries don't seem to charge good.

Typical of all Ni Cd batteries. IMHO, they are junk. If you got five years, you are lucky.
I also fight with the thermistor that measures temp. Those batteries I use an old slow charger that doesn't need the thermistor.
Go to eBay, search for replacement. Cheaper than a rebuilt at battery plus. Be aware the cheapest are only about1500 ma hr. The XRP is 3000.

Discharge the pack 100% WHEN THE CHARGER STOP CHARGING THEM PULL THEM OFF AND PLUG THEM BACK IN. A good pack will have 20volts after charging and sitting for a few minutes. Every cell is 1.2 volts so a 15 volt pack should be at least 18 volts. A lower voltage indicates a bad cell-s. If you have two pack you can probably make a good one out of them. Just pick the cells with most voltage after charging them. Let the pack rest for a day or two before you do that. Retaining a charge is just as important as good voltage. Good Luck...............

I have an old school .25 amp 18v black and decker charger that I have to slow charge some of my old Ni-Mh18v aftermarket batteries that won't charge on new dewalt charger because of the thermistor issue. Put it on a timer. Remove from charger when you feel battery getting warm. Works for some of my old batteries.

Discharge the battery until it won't operate the tool. Let it sit for 30 minutes and try the tool again, it'll probably work for bit and die. That will get the crystal size in the cell a lot smaller, with a greater surface area. Now stick in the charger, it'll probably take longer to charge than normal, all that extra juice going in....this minimizes the memory effect lots of batteries are know for.
