Ford 2000 - no spark

I bought a 1972 Ford 2000 last year, 3 cyl gas engine, started good, ran great, I tuned up the engine by putting new plugs, points, condenser, distributor cap, plug wires and distributor coil. After that it was very hard to start, it would crank over a long time before it would catch and start. Put the tractor away for the winter and this spring it will not start, there is no power going to the spark plugs.

Any ideas of what to check?

Hello orobes1,

Draw a piece of clean paper between the points contacts until the paper comes out clean,

Guido.

I usually find that if it ran right before I tinkered with something, it is usually something that I worked on causing the problem. I would check the gap on the points and would also check the distributor cap and all the wiring connections. It is possible that perhaps a new parts was bad out of the box, or maybe you got the wrong coil?

Is there a gap distance on the points that I should adjust to?

First suspect is the points, clean/buff/polish them and check gap and try again. If they are badly burned or pitted a points file may get you going but a new set is in order.

If its NOT just the points, run my Troubleshooting Procedure linked below

In a case like that what I would do is start with a simple hot wire. Go from the ignition side of the battery to the ignition side of the coil with a wire and see if you have spark. Matter of fact if the points are closed and the the key is off you should get a small spark when you touch that wire to the coil. No spark with points closed means the points are dirty or corroded. Also with the key on you should both see and hear a spark at the points if you open and close them by hand. Be careful doing that or you will find out it has spark just not in the right place because it will zap you. Point gap is 0.025 by the way

Sounds like you gapped the points a little too tight or loose. Not enough so it wouldn't run, but enough to give a weak spark and may effect the timing. Now after it's been sitting, it needs a good spark to fire up.
