Air cylinder

Son is going to work on an air cylinder Friday. Company is going to get a 50 ton crane to get it to ground level. The regulator screw as he calls it is stuck and not accessable with it in place. Screw has a slotted head down in a 5/8 diameter hole. He thinks a welder can weld a bolt to the head of the screw. I told him I thought there were bolts, rods with a hole in the center that you could weld through to attach to the screw. Am I dreaming or is there such a thing and is it something special?

You could try an impact screwdriver, I would just replace the regulator if you are going to the expense of bringing in a crane.

Somehow I doubt it is a simple regulator like you get from Napa for your compressor, it may very likely be screw into the cylinder body that acts as a needle valve to limit flow. Depends how deep it is, they make some rods that can buildup a ways on a broken bolt and then weld a nut on the end. Touchy operation tho. I would say likely I would do as was suggested and attack it with a impact driver, the handheld type you strike with a hammer. If that didn't work I would start drilling, heating and easy out carefully.

The best way I have found to loosen screws is to use a screwdriver made to hold up to pounding on the end and to try to turn it while pounding on it with an air hammer. The air hammer has frequent enough blows so that the screwdriver doesn't have time to jump up out of the slot. It also gets in hundreds of blows in the time you would get just a few with a hammer by hand.

Hello mf294-4,

Here is what you need, impact driver optional. This one is for 1 1/2 in" threaded units. It is a 1 and 3/16" tip. You just need to get one to fit your needs. That one is a Sears one, I'm sure there are others who make the same tool..........
