Want to know..how to operate a gear puller

So to settle an argument..

Tell me how you all use a gear puller to pull a gear off a splined shaft..or pulley or whatever..

And if you have room use a penny under the pressure screw to
Prevent damage to shaft and puller
Take the time to center and align the puller so that its
A straight pull

You all forgot to add to OIL the screw. I used to kill them off pretty often until I figured that out. Motor oil works fine.

And don't drive the main screw in with an impact wrench unless you want to shop for a new puller.

If your puller has a pointed screw, and your shaft is flat on the end, put a nut or something to protect the point on the puller screw. If your shaft is threaded, like on a lawnmower engine, a bolt that fits the threads with a dimple drilled in the top works to both protect the point and keep the point centered on the shaft. Make the bolt as short as possible, even if you have to remove it to push the pulley or whatever farther.

Most times, once you start something moving, it will be easier to keep it moving.

If you are pulling off a taper, like a lawnmower flywheel, and decide you have to strike the puller, use the bolt or nut to keep the flywheel from jumping off the shaft.

If it's a sizable puller of decent quality it should take an impact just fine, do it all the time at home and work

This all depends on the size and type of puller. I like to position the hydraulic power unit as far from the action as possible, sometimes they jump.

Using an impact on the puller is the only way I use them. You don't have to try to counteract the torque you are trying to apply to the puller and they just seem to work better.

sometimes if you try an pull a gear with a 2 or 3 jaw puller, you ruin the gear. in that case use a bearing splitter to grasp the gear , then a puller hooked to the splitter. this is the otc set i have
poke here
